The Last Verse I Never Read to You
Once, you were the dawn that colored every sky,
Now you're merely a question that learned not to ask why.
I searched for forever inside your gentle embrace,
Only to awaken alone in an unfamiliar place.
I watered our garden through sunshine and rain,
Never imagining I'd harvest nothing but pain.
I carried your storms while silencing my own fear,
Smiling through heartache just to keep you near.
If love were measured by promises faithfully kept,
Mine would fill oceans for every night I quietly wept.
If devotion were written in every prayer I'd compose,
Your name would still bloom like an unforgotten rose.
Tell me...
How does a stranger wear the face I once knew?
How does forever become a passing view?
How does "always" become "once upon a time?"
How does a love once sacred forget its rhyme?
I waited for honesty beneath every silent moon,
Believing the truth would finally arrive soon.
Instead, silence became the loudest reply,
Teaching my hopeful heart another goodbye.
I often wondered if I simply lacked worth,
If I had somehow loved you the wrong way from birth.
Was I too patient? Too willing? Too kind?
Or was I merely loving someone already leaving in mind?
I asked the heavens with tears I couldn't disguise,
Searching for answers hidden beyond the skies.
Who was I to deserve an honest goodbye?
Who was I to ask the reason why?
Who was I to deserve the whole truth instead?
When all I received was your silence instead.
Then time, the gentlest teacher wrapped in disguise,
Lifted the veil away from my weary eyes.
The fault was never in the love I gave,
But in expecting honesty from someone unwilling to stay brave.
My conscience sleeps without fear every night,
For I loved you with everything that felt right.
I never wandered while holding your hand,
Never built another dream on borrowed sand.
I chose you each morning without keeping score,
Even when choosing you wounded me more.
Perhaps my greatest mistake wasn't loving too deep,
But believing forever was ours to keep.
Now I walk roads where your footsteps have ceased,
Learning that letting go can become its own peace.
I started my medication not so long ago,
Watching my weary body struggle to heal and grow.
Rashes now bloom where my skin once lay clear,
Tiny reminders that healing is never sincere.
Sometimes the cure arrives dressed as pain,
Before teaching the soul how to breathe again.
The strange part is thisโI visit the same place as you,
The same quiet clinic where your footsteps once grew.
Its walls remain patient, its hallways unchanged,
Only our stories have quietly rearranged.
I sit there in silence while memories appear,
Like whispers that only a broken heart can hear.
Don't mistake these words as a plea or demand,
I'm no longer reaching for your hand.
I'm only telling you because there was a time,
When your every heartbeat echoed with mine.
Now we're two names carried by different streams,
Living separate mornings and separate dreams.
I heard you've already found someone new,
Someone whose tomorrow now begins with you.
I won't pretend that truth did not leave a scar,
For grief often travels farther than we are.
Still, I hope your laughter is honest and bright,
Not borrowed from shadows that vanish at night.
I hope you become the man I once believed,
Not the one my broken heart quietly grieved.
As for me, I'll gather the pieces you never saw fall,
Building a stronger soul from the ruins of it all.
Perhaps one day you'll remember my name,
Not with regret, not with guilt, not with shame.
But as someone who loved beyond reason and pride,
Someone who never had a place to hide.
Someone who chose you in every season and weather,
While believing we'd always walk life together.
You may forget the tears that stained my face,
But I hope you remember my unwavering grace.
Because people forget arguments as years pass by,
Yet they remember the ones who loved without asking why.
So I'll become a quiet verse carried by the breeze,
A prayer whispered softly through autumn trees.
I'll become a chapter the years cannot erase,
A familiar echo without a face.
This is not revenge.
This is release.
This is the sound of choosing peace.
May your roads be gentle wherever they bend,
May your heart find the truth before journeys end.
And if our souls should ever meet beneath another sky,
I hope we'll greet each other...
without another goodbye.
