IT EATS, THEN STEALS — Costasiella kuroshimae

After feeding on algae, this tiny sea slug does something extraordinary: it keeps some of the algae’s chloroplasts—the structures responsible for photosynthesis. Rather than digesting everything it consumes, it temporarily stores these microscopic structures inside its own tissues.

This phenomenon is called “kleptoplasty”meaning “stolen plastids.” With the retained chloroplasts still able to carry out photosynthesis for a limited time, the leaf sheep can temporarily harness energy from sunlight—earning its group the fascinating nickname, “solar-powered sea slugs.”

But don’t be fooled by its leafy appearance. The leaf sheep isn't a plant, and it doesn't produce its own chloroplasts. It simply makes use of what it acquires from its algal meals.

Tiny, strange, and surprisingly clever, the leaf sheep shows us that nature doesn't always follow the rules we expect. Sometimes, survival means making the most unexpected partnership—or borrowing someone else's superpower.

MEET LEOPARDUS TILCAYO—NATURE'S NEWEST MEMBER!

After more than a hundred year, meet the Leopardus tilcalyo!

Its name was derived from its local name tilcalyo which according to researchers doesn't mean anything in the Spanish language as a nod for the recognition it garnered from locals of Bolivia. The cats' way of living — what they eat, how they mate, and how they live — are still unknown. What we know as of this writing is it resides in the eastern slope of the Andes Mountain of Bolivia.

They are still more to uncover about this newly-discovered species, and its discovery will pave the way for new investigations of the cat family.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰? 👀🐨 Koalas and humans may seem worlds apart, yet both have fingerprints with remarkably similar ridge patterns.

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐲? 🤷🏻‍♀️ These friction ridges help improve grip and tactile sensitivity. For koalas, they are especially useful for gripping branches and handling food. This fascinating similarity shows how different species can develop similar physical adaptations when faced with similar functional demands.

𝗬𝗘𝗦-𝗢 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗡-𝗨𝗣 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘 | 𝗦𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 7, 2026

Despite the not-so-good weather, our YES-O officers and members still came together to lend a hand in keeping GMATHS clean and green.

With the time and effort we had, we were able to clean and improve some parts of the school vicinity. The weather may not have been on our side, but our commitment to making a difference remained.

Together, let’s turn small actions into lasting change! 🍀

"If we love nature, nature will also love us." 🌱♻️

Congratulations to our former Eco-Star, Ms. Cherry Marie Abellanosa for winning Ms. Bancal 2026!

During her run, she didn't just walked by herself, but with her wit, passion, and dedication to win not just the crown, but the hearts of every person who sees themselves in her.

In the Question and Answer segment, her advocacy embodies not just the purity of her heart, but the quiet hymns that speaks through nature—emphasizing the role of young leaders in championing environmental projects. She also talked about how our small actions can catalyze the change that we want to see in our society.

Thank you for always reminding that it is high time to prioritize our environment, and to always serve for a greener and a better cause.
