Siargao Wildlings

Siargao Wildlings We are a nature based early learning program for children, ages 3-6 years old. And now, in one day.. We have a choice to walk away and forget this event.

We are located at The Wildernest Farm, in the heart of the Tawin Tawin countryside. Support Us:

This is the nature based preschool we launched from the ground up, during the height of the pandemic, last year. during a category 5 Typhoon called Odette, just like everywhere else in Siargao, was devastatingly taken away. Not just the preschool, but also our home and farm that we had also built. As w

e felt so disheartened of all the hard work and passion we poured into this project. Also because the feeling of being defeated had won us over. But for some reason… I had an epiphany. Deep within my conscious intuition.. we needed to keep going. Now more than ever. Even if we now have to go twice the distance to rebuild, I know that it’ll be worth it. Be part of this journey with us.. help us get back on our feet. So that we can build something bigger than ourselves and in return we will give back to our community, so that it can be stronger and more resilient. Anything helps and please share this far and wide. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-boley-chi-rebuild-after-their-loss?utm_source=messenger&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1

With much love and gratitude.. Chi, Boley, Django, and Teal

Just like everyday life, our world isn’t compartmentalised into subjects.

The way we learn individual subjects is actually by applying them in real life situations, to make them tangible, comprehensible and relative.

In every given moment we are processing numerous lessons simultaneously. From language and literacy to science and art to maths and physical education all at the same time, this is the best way we learn these subjects, because that’s how our brain works.

Here’s Django and Zari exploring language and numeracy, learning about the letter ‘X’ and counting 5 scoops of ‘ice cream’.

A seed poem

From the ashes, from the dust
From the dark and into trust
Reaching out with every limb
And gently knowing deep within
Slowly growing, life uncoil
Sunlight, water, healthy soil
Dawn has broken, leaf has turned
From the ashes that had burned.

🌱

It’s suitably apt that after 8 months since planting a seed, we are now seeing our efforts come alive. What was once stripped bare has regrown and a sense of spirit has rejuvenated.

Today we welcomed in our first ever seedling group where we will grow together and lay down the foundation of what is to come.

As we prepare for our new school year we are fundraising for a permanent shelter to protect our wildlings from the elements.

We have been rebuilding the infrastructure of our farm and the school for the last 7 months after typhoon Odette and now need a little more help to finish the school building.

If you love what we do and wish to support our rebuilding efforts then please check the link to our gofundme in our bio.

Thanks so much to everyone that has helped this far and for believing in what we do.

Independence Day

Looking back to the day before summer school, we were getting ready for Independence Day. It was unintentionally ironic that it would be our first day of forest school for over 7 months. Ironic in the fact that what we advocate most for within our emergent curriculum is that our students gain autonomy. The freedom to choose their own path through their own learning journey, that they have the chance to take risks and develop skills that free them from the binds of reliance.

Week 2 at wild wild summer school was filled with magic, from spontaneous magic tricks at reception, flower and leaf printing, making magic wands from what the wildlings collected from nature’s treasures, to magical rainy days and exploring the mangroves.

Here’s a look at our first week at wild wild summer school... The wildlings definitely brought the magic in everything they participated in.

Whether it was making a sun-dial, nest building, collaborative artwork, or nature walks.. every step was one of wonder and joy.

Most importantly, they got to choose independent child-led free play.. and as we all know, this is where the real learning happens. ✨🌱❤️

One of the most fundamental key factors of running a forest school is to actually have a ‘forest’.

Before typhoon Odette, we used our mango orchard as part of our outdoor school, incorporating nearly all of our daily activities under the shade of the trees canopy.

This has now all but gone leaving the students without the protection from the elements so we felt it was imperative to at least try to raise the trees back into an upright position.

We initially thought that it would only take 1-5 carabao to lift the trees but in a trial day we realized it would take a lot more.

Even on the smallest trees, 1 carabao, 8 men including 2 from the Filipino army and 3 chain block pulleys were no match for the trees. After a long day of trying we only managed to raise 2 or 3 trees and it felt deflating. Now we go back to the drawing board on how we can recreate our ‘forest school’.
