Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon announced plans to redesign EDSA to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists, moving beyond car-centric planning. In a recent interview on James Deakin’s podcast, Dizon said the pandemic highlighted the urgent need for safer, segregated lanes for foot traffic and light mobility, with sidewalks widened and bike lanes physically separated from vehicles to reduce road conflicts.
The redesign aims to create a "pedestrian highway," improving safety and accessibility while complementing the efficiency of the EDSA Busway and MRT systems. Dizon added that the department is institutionalizing these reforms through formal orders, ensuring technical consistency and road safety standards endure regardless of changes in leadership. The approach will also extend to other major arteries, including C5, aligning infrastructure development with global standards observed in cities such as Taipei and Singapore.
