Engr. Romeo Q. Tolentino earned his BS in Civil Engineering, Master of Arts in Teaching with a major in Mathematics, and Master of Engineering Science from the University of the East–Manila.

He currently teaches at National University–Manila, where he holds the rank of Assistant Professor 4. He has also taught at the University of the East, Far Eastern University, Mapúa University, and the College Preparatory Center of Saudi Aramco in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He is the author and creator of well-known books on calculator techniques and has pioneered innovative approaches in mathematics and engineering education.

Geometry and Trigonometry Session 1

Dr. Joseph Ray Clarence G. Damasco is an assistant professor at the Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines Diliman. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, graduating summa cm laude, as well as his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Mathematics from UP Diliman. He completed his PhD in 2019.

His doctoral dissertation focused on symmetric fundamental domains for lattices and perfect colorings of graphs. He has also contributed to research on mathematical models of biological processes. His current research interests include tilings, geometric dissections, graph colorings, and games on graphs.

Geometry and Trigonometry Session 2

Dr. Judy Ann L. Donato is an assistant professor at the Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines Diliman, where she also earned her PhD. She is a member of the Institute’s Coding and Number Theory Group, and her research focuses on integer partitions. She is also serving as a national-level administrator for the 29th Philippine Mathematical Olympiad.

𝐌𝐑. 𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐙𝐎 𝐁𝐀𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐑𝐀𝐍
Statistics Session

Lorenzo Baquiran is an MS Statistics candidate with a GWA of 1.15. He was formerly an instructor at the UP Diliman School of Statistics. He earned his BS in Statistics magna cm laude, and his research interests include time-series analysis and computational statistics.

He has served as the lead technical expert and statistician on two national-scale survey studies, contributing to questionnaire design, sampling, pilot testing, enumerator training, multi-region deployment, and analysis. He has also served as a resource person or training assistant for more than a dozen statistical training programs delivered to public and private institutions, including the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Department of Labor and Employment, and the Department of Economy, Planning and Development.

Today, October 9, 2026, is UPDMFI’s 37th birthday, the anniversary of the Foundation’s registration in 1989. For nearly four decades, the UP Diliman Mathematics Foundation, Inc. (UPDMFI) has worked with the Institute of Mathematics to promote research, education, and professional engagement in mathematics.

Over the past year, UPDMFI has advanced this mission by supporting the 2026 Professorial Chairs, Faculty Research Grants, and Junior Faculty Grants; providing partial funding for Congruence & Convergence, a conference celebrating Dr. Fidel Nemenzo’s 65th birthday; and supporting professional learning through the UPDMFI Data Science Workshop.

These efforts recognize excellence, strengthen early-career faculty, support research, and create opportunities for the mathematics community to learn and work together.

We are excited to announce an academic collaboration taking shape between UPDMFI and the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines Tertiary Level, Inc (MTAP-TL). An event is tentatively planned for November 27–28, 2026, at UP Diliman. Further details will be shared once finalized.

This collaboration grew out of a productive preliminary meeting on September 11, 2026, with MTAP-TL President Dr. Aileen A. Diansuy and Board of Directors member Dr. Jay D. Buscano.

The UP Diliman Mathematics Foundation, Inc. (UPDMFI) mourns the passing of Dr. Ma. Lailani B. Walo on September 14, 2026.

A mathematician, educator, and member of UPDMFI, Dr. Walo was a faculty member of the Institute of Mathematics, UP Diliman. She also served as secretary of the UPDMFI Board of Trustees for six years (2012 - 2018). She earned her PhD in Mathematics from UP Diliman in 2008, and her research focused on group theory, particularly color symmetry.

UPDMFI extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Walo’s family, friends, students, and colleagues. We honor her life, scholarship, and service to the mathematics community.

The UP Diliman Mathematics Foundation, Inc. (UPDMFI) congratulates the recipients of its 2026 professorial chairs, conferred during the UPDMFI Awarding Ceremony on August 24, 2026:

• Dr. Paul Reine Kennett L. Dela Rosa — Dr. Concesa Milan-Baduel Professorial Chair in Mathematics
• Dr. Rolando B. Perez III — Prof. Jose Maria L. Escaner IV Professorial Chair in Mathematics

Dr. Dela Rosa is an associate professor specializing in linear and multilinear algebra, matrix analysis, and matrix theory. He heads UP Diliman Institute of Mathematics’ Matrix Analysis and Linear Algebra Group and received Second Prize in the 2024 NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists. Dr. Perez is an assistant professor and the Institute’s coordinator for student and external affairs. His research spans complex analysis and Fourier analysis.

The seven-year Dr. Concesa Milan-Baduel Professorial Chair (2021–2027) was established by the seven children of Dr. Concesa Milan-Baduel and her husband, the late Atty. Mirardo Baduel. Dr. Milan-Baduel (1920–2000) was a distinguished educator who served as vice president of the University of the Visayas and later became founding president of Greenville College.

The Prof. Jose Maria L. Escaner IV Professorial Chair honors mathematician Dr. Jose Maria “Joma” L. Escaner IV (1970–2025), who played a pivotal role in shaping actuarial science education at UP Diliman as academic head of the Institute’s Mathematical Finance and Actuarial Science Group.

The grants bear the names of distinguished Filipino mathematicians Prof. Raymundo Favila (1909 - 1995), Prof. Rene Felix (1950 - 2021), and Prof. Vidal Tan (1893 - 1978), whose work as scholars, educators, and mentors helped strengthen mathematics in the University and the country.

The grants recognize young faculty members of the Institute of Mathematics, UP Diliman, for their exemplary commitment to excellence in research and dedicated service to the University.

The grants bear the names of three distinguished members of the UP mathematics community. Prof. Flor V. Cejalvo served UP for nearly five decades, was part of the pioneering research group on crystallographic groups, and coauthored widely used mathematics textbooks. Prof. Noli N. Reyes was an award-winning researcher in approximation theory, and signal processing. Prof. Evelyn L. Tan made notable contributions to graph theory and combinatorics and received the 2005 NRCP Achievement Award.

The UP Diliman Mathematics Foundation, Inc. (UPDMFI) has elected its new 16-member Board of Trustees, with Dr. Marrick C. Neri and Dr. Jaime DL. Caro continuing at the helm as President and Vice President, respectively, for another two-year term.

The newly elected Board brings together colleagues who will help advance UPDMFI’s programs in support of mathematics, research, professional development, and the wider UP Diliman Mathematics community.

Joining Dr. Neri and Dr. Caro among the Foundation’s officers are 𝐃𝐫. 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐑. 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐚, Secretary, and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨 𝐌. 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐨, Treasurer.

The Board has also designated trustees to lead several key areas of the Foundation’s work: 𝐃𝐫. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐏. 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐨 for Fundraising, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐕. 𝐂𝐚𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐦 for Media and Membership, and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐁. 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐳 for Trainings and Seminars.

“Over the next two years, we hope to build on the work that UPDMFI has already established while strengthening our engagement with the UP Mathematics community, broadening support for our programs, and creating more opportunities for our members, alumni, faculty, and partners to take part in the Foundation’s work,” Dr. Neri said.

UPDMFI extends its sincere appreciation to the 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒–𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐬 for their service, dedication, and commitment to the Foundation. Under their stewardship, UPDMFI continued its support for professorial chairs, faculty and junior faculty grants, training activities, and other initiatives benefiting the UP Diliman Mathematics community.

UPDMFI also pays special tribute to the late 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐋. 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐕 and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐏. 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐚, who served on the 2024–2026 Board. Their service to the Foundation and their contributions to UP Mathematics and the broader mathematical community remain deeply valued.

UPDMFI congratulates the newly elected Board of Trustees and looks forward to their continued service, collaboration, and support for the advancement of mathematics.
