JUST IN: A PROPOSED 600-MW LNG POWER PLANT PROJECT IN KAUSWAGAN, LANAO DEL NORTE, WILL NO LONGER PUSH THROUGH! ✊

📰

"In an email received by the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ) on June 15, the Environmental Management Bureau in Northern Mindanao (EMB-10) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) provided a copy of a memorandum it sent to the DENR-EMB Central Office detailing the actions taken in response to a complaint letter from PMCJ and several other individuals and organizations. [...]

'This is a huge win in the fight for climate justice. The people of Kauswagan are already suffering from the existing GNPower Kauswagan coal-fired power plant, which affects their livelihood from fishing, their health, and causes pollution in the area,' said Rara Ada, Mindanao coordinator of PMCJ."

We celebrate these wins for our people and planet. Let us continue our fight against fossil fuels! 💪

IN an unexpected turn of events, climate advocates and affected com munities can breathe a sigh of relief, securing a win for the planet’s battle against climate change. A proposed 600-megawatt liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant project in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte, will no longer proceed as...

Total Energies, one of the world’s biggest polluters, just announced US $23.2 BILLION in profits for 2023 — Earth’s hottest year on record.

While Total makes these obscene profits, their business - the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels - is driving deadly extreme weather and damage to people’s homelands and livelihoods.⁣

The hundreds of billions they rake in have been taken from the pockets of individuals and families, pushing basic necessities out of reach for many - either directly through skyrocketing energy bills that have been exacerbating the cost of living, or indirectly with industry tax breaks and subsidies.⁣

Individuals, families and small businesses should not have to bear rising energy costs, or go without basic needs, while oil and gas companies laugh all the way to the bank.⁣

The fossil fuel industry has been aware of the climate impacts of their business for decades. They have deliberately ignored the truth and discredited the science, so they could continue their enormous profits.⁣

Their emissions poison our atmosphere while their waste contaminates the water we drink and the air we breathe. Treating our communities and planet as collateral damage, these corporations ignore the consequences of extreme weather while homes are destroyed, and livelihoods wiped out.⁣

It’s time for justice: governments must make these companies stop drilling for polluting fuels, and start paying for the damage they’ve caused and the just and fair transition we need.

Tag in the comments and demand they stop drilling and start paying!

GOV, LAGMAN DECLARES CLIMATE EMERGENCY OF ALBAY

Governor Greco “Grex” Lagman declares the Climate Emergency of Albay Province to fortify its commitment to do immediate and substantial actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adhere to the Paris Agreement.

Lagman announced the said declaration during the Albay stopover of the Climate Walkers who came all the way from Manila to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda.

The Albay local government is set to conduct five action points guided by the Climate Emergency declaration: Encouraging Renewable Energy (RE) Investment in Albay’s energy sector; Discouraging Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and other fossil fuels as primary energy source; Urging financial institutions to craft clear roadmaps to promptly cease support for fossils fuel projects, aligning with the IPCC's recommendations to peak fossil fuel use by 2025; Initiating circular and sustainable development in all facets of work; and advocating for policy reforms that address ecological challenges, including institutionalizing the local climate action plan and facilitating a just transition to a low-carbon economy.

PMCJ urges other LGUs and the National Government. There is no time to lose especially with the Filipinos continuously suffering from the extreme weather events as a result of climate change.

THE PHILIPPINES HAS POOR AIR QUALITY. The smog in Manila last week is alarming proof.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set air quality standards to regulate pollution within acceptable levels. Among the monitored pollutants are particulate matter, which are solid and liquid particles found in the air.

Particulate matter is classified between PM10 and PM2.5. PM2.5 is much finer than PM10. When inhaled, it can go deep into the lungs and the bloodstream, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

PM2.5 and PM10 are both produced by industrial processes. PM2.5 is mostly attributed to the burning of fossil fuels, while PM10 can come from industrial waste, landfills, agriculture, and construction sites. Businesses that produce these pollutants must ensure that their emissions are within the air quality standards.

In the Philippines, the Clean Air Act was passed since 1999. However, air quality standards remain so low that companies can continue operating even when they’re causing dangerous levels of pollution. Communities around fossil fuel power plants suffer from increased rates of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, with some cases leading to death.

We call on the Department of Health and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to work together in holding polluters accountable. Strengthen the air quality monitoring system and ensure that the public and our environment is protected from the hazards of air pollution.

RAISE AIR QUALITY STANDARDS NOW!

Every fraction of a degree matters.

Nature has warned us through deadly floods, storms and raging fires - our planet is fast approaching tipping points with irreversible consequences.

Despite pledges made by governments to reduce their carbon footprints, there is no credible pathway to 1.5°C in place. More than ever, urgent is needed to bridge this gap.

But there is still hope. Addressing the climate crisis & limiting temperature rise is possible, but requires a rapid transformation of societies.
