SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 15, 2026

THE GOSPEL
Matthew 5: 20-22, 27-28, 33-34, 37

Jesus said to his disciples:
"I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses
that of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you,
whoever is angry with his brother
will be liable to judgment.

"You have heard that it was said,
You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you,
everyone who looks at a woman with lust
has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

"Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
Do not take a false oath,
but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
But I say to you, do not swear at all.
Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,'and your 'No' mean 'No.'
Anything more is from the evil one."

REFLECTION
In this Gospel, Jesus challenges His disciples to go beyond external obedience. It is not enough to avoid killing — we must uproot anger. It is not enough to avoid adultery — we must purify our hearts. It is not enough to avoid false oaths — we must live with integrity.

The scribes and Pharisees focused on the letter of the law. But Jesus calls us to something deeper: conversion of the heart.

When He says, “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No,’” He invites us to live with honesty, clarity, and sincerity. A true disciple does not manipulate words, hide intentions, or live a double life. Our words must reflect what is truly in our hearts.

Righteousness that surpasses the scribes and Pharisees is not about being stricter — it is about being more loving, more truthful, and more authentic.

Today, Jesus asks us:
Is there anger we need to surrender? Is there impurity we need to cleanse? Are our words truthful and sincere?

May our lives speak clearly of our faith.
May our hearts match our actions.
And may our “Yes” to God be wholehearted and faithful.

FEBRUARY 14 | MEMORIAL OF SAINT VALENTINE
Patron of Lovers and Married Couples

Today, we remember St. Valentine, a third-century priest and martyr of Rome who courageously witnessed to Christ during a time of persecution. Though history preserves few certain details about his life, tradition tells us that he defended Christian marriage, strengthened persecuted believers, and remained faithful even before Emperor Claudius II.

One beloved story recounts how he healed the blind daughter of a Roman official through prayer, leading to the conversion of the household. For his steadfast faith and refusal to renounce Christ, he was imprisoned and eventually beheaded on the Via Flaminia around the year 269.

Over the centuries, his name became associated with love—not merely romantic affection, but faithful, sacrificial, Christ-centered love. In the Middle Ages, his feast day came to symbolize the coming of spring and the season of new life. Today, he is honored as the Patron Saint of lovers, engaged couples, happy marriages, and young people.

Beyond flowers and greetings, St. Valentine reminds us that true love is rooted in sacrifice, fidelity, and courage—the kind of love that reflects Christ Himself.

PRAYER
St. Valentine, faithful witness and martyr of love, pray for all couples, families, and young people. Strengthen marriages, guide those preparing for lifelong commitment, and help us to love not only with words but with sacrifice and faithfulness. May our hearts reflect the self-giving love of Christ.

FEBRUARY 14 | MEMORIAL OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS
Patrons of Europe and the Slavic Peoples.

Today, we honor Sts. Cyril and Methodius, brothers from Thessalonica and known as the Apostles to the Slavs. Chosen as missionaries in the 9th century, they brought the Gospel to the Slavic peoples with wisdom, courage, and deep respect for their culture.

Understanding the importance of proclaiming God’s Word in a language people could understand, they translated the Scriptures and the liturgy into Slavonic and developed a script known as Glagolitic, the foundation of what later became the Cyrillic alphabet. Though they faced opposition, imprisonment, and political struggles, they remained steadfast in their mission—defending the use of the vernacular in worship so that all could encounter Christ more deeply.

St. Cyril died in Rome in 869, entrusting the mission to his brother. St. Methodius continued preaching, teaching, and translating Scripture despite persecution, laying the foundations of Christianity across Slavic lands. Their legacy endures not only in the faith of nations but also in their language, literature, and liturgical life.

Their lives remind us that the Gospel must be proclaimed with courage, wisdom, and love—meeting people where they are, speaking to their hearts in a language they understand.

PRAYER
Saints Cyril and Methodius, faithful missionaries and defenders of the faith, intercede for the Church throughout the world. Guide missionaries, strengthen those who proclaim the Gospel, and help us cherish the gift of worship in our own language. May we boldly share Christ with humility and unity, just as you did.

FEBRUARY 13 | MEMORIAL OF SAINT CATHERINE DE RICCI
Patroness of the Sick and those suffering from illness

Today, we remember St. Catherine de Ricci, Dominican nun, mystic, and faithful bride of Christ.

Born in Florence in 1522 and baptized Alexandrina, she entered religious life at a young age and took the name Catherine. From childhood, she showed a deep love for prayer and contemplation. Despite suffering from long periods of illness and intense physical pain, she united her suffering with the Passion of Christ and transformed it into prayer.

St. Catherine became known for extraordinary mystical graces. For twelve years, from Thursday noon until Friday afternoon, she experienced the Ecstasy of the Passion, reliving the sufferings of Jesus in profound prayer. She also bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, and was gifted with bilocation. Yet beyond these miracles, she was remembered for her humility, wisdom, and faithful leadership as prioress of her convent.

Many sought her counsel—including future popes—and she corresponded with St. Philip Neri, who himself witnessed her holiness. Despite the attention, Catherine desired only to love Christ and serve her community faithfully. She died in 1589 after a long illness, leaving behind a legacy of deep contemplation and loving union with Jesus.

She is honored as the patron saint of the sick, reminding us that suffering, when united with Christ, becomes a path to holiness.

PRAYER
St. Catherine de Ricci, faithful mystic and lover of Christ Crucified, teach us to unite our sufferings with the Passion of Jesus. Help us to remain humble in grace, patient in illness, and steadfast in prayer. Intercede for all who are sick and burdened, that they may find strength, peace, and hope in the Lord.

FEBRUARY 11 | FEAST OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES
World Day of the Sick

Today, we honor Our Lady of Lourdes, recalling her loving apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 at Lourdes, France. Appearing to a humble and sickly young girl, the Lady revealed herself with the words, “I am the Immaculate Conception,” confirming the Church's teaching and drawing the world back to faith, humility, and prayer.

Through Bernadette's obedience, a spring of water flowed from the grotto—becoming a sign of God's healing grace. Lourdes has since become a place of pilgrimage, prayer, and hope, where countless people have encountered spiritual renewal and healing, and where the suffering are reminded that God has not abandoned them.

This feast also marks the World Day of the Sick, established by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1992, inviting the Church to pray for the sick and to recognize the healing ministry of caregivers. For 2026, the theme chosen by the Holy Father is: “The compassion of the Samaritan: Loving by bearing the pain of others.” This reminds us that true Christian love is shown through closeness, mercy, and shared suffering—especially with those who are ill, poor, lonely, or forgotten.

On this day, we lift up all who are sick, the elderly, healthcare workers, caregivers, and all who accompany them with compassion—continuing the healing mission of Christ.

PRAYER
O loving Mother of Lourdes, comfort of the sick and refuge of the suffering, intercede for all who are burdened by illness in body, mind, or spirit. Strengthen caregivers and health workers with compassion and patience. Grant healing according to God's will, and renew our hearts with faith, hope, and love. May we always see the face of Christ in those who suffer.

FEBRUARY 10 | MEMORIAL OF SAINT SCHOLASTICA
Patroness of Nuns, Sisters and Convulsive Children

Today, we honor St. Scholastica, virgin and twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia, who dedicated her life wholly to God. Born around 480, she was consecrated to the Lord from an early age and later founded a religious community for women near Monte Cassino, living a life of prayer, silence, and devotion.

Once a year, Scholastica and her brother Benedict would meet to pray and share holy conversation. On their final meeting, sensing her death was near, Scholastica asked Benedict to remain with her longer. When he refused out of obedience to his Rule, she turned to God in prayer. A sudden and powerful storm arose, preventing Benedict from leaving—revealing that love and charity fulfill the law more perfectly than strict observance.

Three days later, St. Benedict saw his sister’s soul ascend to heaven in the form of a white dove. He knew then that Scholastica had entered eternal life. Her story reminds us that prayer rooted in love has great power, and that God delights in hearts wholly surrendered to Him.

St. Scholastica is the Patroness of Benedictine women’s communities, nuns, convulsive children, and is invoked against storms and lightning.

PRAYER
O God, You showed us the path of perfect love through the life of Your servant, St. Scholastica. Through her prayers, help us to live in purity of heart, steadfast faith, and sincere charity, that we may one day share in the joy of eternal life. May our lives, like hers, rise to You in prayer and love.

FEBRUARY 9 | MEMORIAL OF SAINT APOLLONIA
Patroness of Dentists and of those suffering from toothaches and dental illnesses

Today, we remember St. Apollonia, an elderly deaconess of Alexandria who gave her life for Christ during a fierce persecution of Christians in the 3rd century. When a violent mob seized her, they beat her mercilessly and knocked out all her teeth. They then threatened to burn her alive unless she denied her faith.

With unwavering courage and deep trust in God, St. Apollonia chose faith over fear. After asking for a brief moment, she freely leapt into the flames, offering her life as a witness to Christ’s love and truth. Her martyrdom stands as a powerful testimony of fidelity, courage, and total surrender to God.

Because of her suffering, St. Apollonia is honored as the Patroness of dentists and of those suffering from toothaches and dental illnesses. She is often depicted holding pincers with a tooth, reminding us that even in great pain, faith can triumph.

PRAYER
St. Apollonia, courageous martyr and faithful servant of Christ, intercede for all who suffer from pain and illness, especially those afflicted with dental ailments. Strengthen us in moments of trial, grant us patience in suffering, and inflame our hearts with love for Jesus and Mary. May we remain faithful to God in all circumstances, as you did, even unto death.
