MONTHLY ATENEAN DOSE #9 | Did you know?

Our school—Ateneo—has meaning and history behind its name! 💙

Ateneo is the Spanish form of the Latin word Athenæum, which derives from Greek, Ᾰ̓θήναιον (Athḗnaion). According to Fr. James J. Meany, SJ, it referred to a Greek temple dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom. 🏛️

The Jesuits first used the name for a private cultural institution in Spain, “Ateneo de Madrid,” founded in 1835. In the Philippines, it was first given to the Escuela Municipal de Manila, which later became Ateneo de Manila University in 1959.

True to its name, Ateneo remains a place of learning, intellect, and excellence in the pursuit of wisdom. 📚

MONTHLY ATENEAN DOSE #8 | Did you know?

The Ateneo cheer “ONE BIG FIGHT” (OBF), which we had frequently expressed in the recent Ignite Intramurals, emerged as a sports chant in the 1970s–80s. However, this also served as a battle cry of rage and despair against Ferdinand Marcos’ martial law.

Edgar Jopson was a Filipino graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University, valedictorian of 1966, who openly protested as an activist against the rule, then was shot in a 1982 military raid in Davao City at the young age of 34.

Not only does the famous cheer embody school spirit in competitions today, but every time we chant it, it is a tribute that reminds us of the untold historical context—the Ateneans’ rally for justice and solidarity against oppression.

Apart from its modern usage, “One Big Fight” is an outcry associated with Atenean leaders and martyrs who died resisting the dictatorship. It is a memorial in remembrance of the victims.

March is the observance of women’s historical achievements.

Hidilyn Diaz won the Philippines' first Olympic weightlifting gold medal. Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe 1969, was the first Filipina to wear the crown. Honorata de la Rama-Hernandez was the first Filipina film actress. Lea Salonga is the first Filipina in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Apo Whang-Od is the last and oldest traditional Kalinga tattooist. Josefa Escoda advocated for women’s suffrage and founded the Girl Scouts in the Philippines. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, a Filipina senator and judge known as the “Iron Lady of Asia” for her stance against corruption, was the first Asian elected to the International Criminal Court, serving in all three branches of the Philippine government.

Florence Parpart invented the electric refrigerator. Ruth Handler created Barbie. Josephine Cochran manufactured the dishwasher. Jeanne Villepreux-Power invented the aquarium. Margaret Sanger funded the discovery of birth control. Stephanie Kwolek invented Kevlar, the material for bulletproof vests and tires. Melitta Bentz invented the coffee filter. Ruth Wakefield created the chocolate chip cookie. Grace Hopper invented the compiler and coined the term “debugging.” Anna Connelly founded the fire escape.
