MAESTRO OF THE MINDANAWON MELODY: THE LEGACY OF ELENA BARRADAS-GEMENTIZA
As we celebrate the National Women’s Month, the story of Elena Barradas-Gementiza highlights the strength and influence of women in shaping culture and community. A double-degree holder and Master of Music graduate, Gementiza has spent over 26 years mentoring young Mindanawons, proving that women’s leadership in the arts can inspire generations.
In 2004, she founded the Davao Girls Choir, an all-female ensemble that empowered young women to find confidence and discipline through music. Under her guidance, the choir rose to national prominence, becoming a three-time champion at the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA). More than awards, the choir became a platform where young girls learned that their voices matter.
Beyond the choir, Gementiza served as a Board Director of the Philippine Choral Directors Association and organized initiatives like Tunog Mindanao, creating opportunities for young musicians across the region. Through mentorship and leadership, she continues to open doors for women in music and the arts.
A devoted wife and mother of three, Gementiza balances family and career with grace and determination. Her journey reminds young girls across the globe that women can lead, inspire, and create lasting impact—both on stage and beyond.
