MIDWEEK VERSE
Daniel 3:17-18
The immediate context of this passage shows how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego became victims of malicious accusations and evil trap of the Chaldeans. A golden image of King Nebuchadnezzar was built and was supposed to be worshipped by the people. Otherwise, the “rebels” would be cast into the fiery furnace. The three young men refused to bow down to this structure.
In terms of the larger context, this historical Book of Daniel narrates how the Babylonians besieged Jerusalem, bringing the Jews into captivity. Politically and geographically, this empire's reign was powerful. From that generation, Daniel and these friends were among the chosen youths who would be socio-culturally redesigned to meet the king's expectations.
Focusing on these verses taught me indispensable virtues: respect, faith, commitment. They politely addressed King Nebuchadnezzar despite their predicament. Deep inside they were convinced of their innocence. However, no arrogant cursing was uttered. Instead, they accepted their situation with utmost respect to the king.
Verse 17 states their genuine faith unto God who---in His immense power---can deliver them from that seemingly hopeless scenario. Perhaps, all the stories passed on to them by their faithful ancestors and even their own spiritual encounters have come alive... bursting into testimonies at the face of death.
Lastly, verse 18 shocks us with the statement of their commitment: BUT IF NOT... Thus, even if God permits their tragic death at that very moment, they firmly resolved not to shift loyalty.
In Grammar, the conjunction “BUT” is short yet crucial in changing the sentence’s impact. Personally, this lesson is truly life-changing. Persistent faith brings us to believe that God answers our prayer in the midst of a very difficult situation.
Nevertheless, the test of genuine faith is when God says 'NO' if He wills not to deliver us from a misery or trouble or sickness. BUT IF NOT...can we still raise our voice to testify about His faithfulness?
