The Beginnings
October 15, 2013-The province of Bohol in the central part of the Philippines was struck by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. According to World Health Organization’s report, “The earthquake affected over 1.2 million people, 222 people died (195 in Bohol), 976 were injured and eight people missing. Over 79,000 structures including homes, roads, churches, schools and public buildings were damaged, of which 14,500 were totally destroyed, resulting in over 340,000 displaced people” (2014). In an effort to reinforce communities, IHHELPP with the aid of Louell Jeanne Lorzano, a Brigham Young University-Hawaii alumna and a native of Bohol, worked together in establishing “disaster-resilient” public facilities. With the use of CEB (compressed-earth block) technology, IHHELPP is currently building 4 communal restrooms in the municipalities of Calape, Tubigon, Clarin and Inabanga. This endeavor aims to serve public school students and constituents within the respective barangays.
