She came to the well at noon,
the hottest part of the day.
In their culture,
women drew water
early in the morning
or late in the afternoon,
when it was cooler
and to meet with the others,
since the well had become
a place of community.
Going at noon was a silent message,
āI donāt belong with the others.ā
āI donāt want to face the whispers.ā
āIād rather endure the heat than endure the stares.ā
Shame can do that to you.
It isolates you.
It convinces you
that avoiding people
is safer than being known.
But what she didnāt know was this.
Jesus went through Samaria, on purpose.
Jews normally avoided Samaria entirely
because of centuries of hostility and religious division.
To add, men did not casually speak with women in public.
Rabbis avoided anyone with a questionable reputation.
Yet Jesus broke every cultural barrier to meet her,
Jew vs. Samaritan.
Man vs. woman.
Rabbi vs. outcast.
Holy vs. broken.
He waited for her at the very well
she tried to use as a hiding place.
He knew her story.
He knew her sin.
He knew the weight she carried,
five husbands, a current situation
that wasnāt marriage,
and a community
that had labeled her dirty long ago.
And yet He came anyway.
Not to expose her shame
but to lift it.
Not to judge her past
but to offer her a future.
Not to remind her what she lost
but to give her living water,
a new identity,
a healed soul,
a restored life.
The woman who went to the well alone
became the woman who ran back to town saying,
āCome, see a Man who told me everything I ever did!ā (John 4:29)
Listen, the outcast became the first evangelist in her village.
Because thatās what Jesus does,
He sits where others wouldnāt sit.
He speaks to those others avoid.
He brings near those society pushes away.
Are you "in the well at noon" too?
Have you been avoiding God?
Avoiding people?
Avoiding places?
that remind you of your failures?
Look, Jesus isnāt avoiding you,
He never will.
Heās crossing every barrier,
your shame, your fear, your past,
to sit by the āwellā of your life
and meet you personally.
Because you see,
He doesnāt wait for perfect people.
He pursues hiding hearts.
And when He finds you,
He doesnāt point at your mess,
He offers you Himself.
