Glacier Collapse Suspected in Deadly Nepal Flood
A catastrophic flash flood near the Nepal–Tibet border may have been triggered by the collapse of part of a glacier, according to preliminary satellite analysis and expert assessments. The collapse appears to have sent ice, rock and debris into the Lhende River, creating a sudden and destructive surge downstream.
The flood swept through communities in Nepal, destroying homes, roads, bridges and infrastructure. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded nearby shortly before the disaster, although its role remains under investigation.
Scientists are also examining the broader impact of a warming Himalayas, where changing glacier conditions may increase the risk of sudden floods and other disasters. However, climate change has not been established as the direct cause of this specific event, and investigations are ongoing.
