The Davao Oriental State University DORSU M2P2 Research Program, led by its Project Leader - Dr. Emily S. Antonio, conducted a ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ข๐ ๐ง, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ง-๐ฎ๐ฉ event to address solid waste flowing into our oceans. The Education Campaign shared M2P2 findings, tracing the impact: green turtles suffer fatal blockages from ingesting plastic bags mistaken for jellyfish, while microplastics in fish transfer to humans through seafood sold in markets. The Philippines, Asiaโs top contributor to oceanic garbage, accounts for 36.38% of global plastic waste entering the sea in 2019 (Earth.org, 2023). The campaign also emphasized policies to adopt sustainable alternatives.
The research program sought the assistance of the Municipality of Cateel, which provided critical support for this initiative. It engaged DepEd, MDRRMO, coastal barangay officials, DOrSU-Cateel Extension Campus, and other stakeholders in a united effort to protect marine environments and public health.
