The Davao Oriental State University DORSU M2P2 Research Program, led by its Project Leader - Dr. Emily S. Antonio, conducted a ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐•๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐‚๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ ๐ง, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‚๐จ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐‚๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ง-๐ฎ๐ฉ event to address solid waste flowing into our oceans. The Education Campaign shared M2P2 findings, tracing the impact: green turtles suffer fatal blockages from ingesting plastic bags mistaken for jellyfish, while microplastics in fish transfer to humans through seafood sold in markets. The Philippines, Asiaโ€™s top contributor to oceanic garbage, accounts for 36.38% of global plastic waste entering the sea in 2019 (Earth.org, 2023). The campaign also emphasized policies to adopt sustainable alternatives.

The research program sought the assistance of the Municipality of Cateel, which provided critical support for this initiative. It engaged DepEd, MDRRMO, coastal barangay officials, DOrSU-Cateel Extension Campus, and other stakeholders in a united effort to protect marine environments and public health.

A tree planting activity was successfully held in San Antonio, Cateel, Davao Oriental, in celebration of the The event was organized by the Municipal Environment & Natural Resources Office (MENRO) in partnership with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Mdrrmc Cateel (MDRRMO), National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Patubig sa Sakahan Onse, Anflo Banana Corporation, and Cateel Vocational High School Official (CVHS).

This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the significance of forests and the vital role they play in preserving our environment. It brought together local students, government officials, and community members who actively participated in planting various tree species to help restore and improve the areaโ€™s natural ecosystem.

The event not only highlighted the importance of forests but also promoted collaboration between different sectors in the community to make a lasting environmental impact. With the support of organizations like MDRRMO, NIA, Anflo Banana Corp., and CVHS, the tree planting activity serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and nurture our natural resources for the benefit of future generations.

The International Day of the Forests, recognized globally on March 21st each year, serves as a reminder of the crucial role trees and forests play in combating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and supporting local economies.

Through efforts like these, the partners hope to inspire more local communities to engage in environmental conservation, ensuring that the beauty and health of our natural landscapes continue to thrive.

The three-day workshop on the Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) and the Orientation on the Unified Solid Waste Management (SWM) Logbook wrapped up on March 6, 2025, at Waterfront Insular Hotel, Davao City. Led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau Region XI (DENR-EMB 11), this event brought together LGUs across the Davao Region, including PENRO representatives, to strengthen waste management efforts.

WACS plays a crucial role by analyzing waste composition, providing essential data to boost recycling and reduce the Philippinesโ€™ growing waste crisis. Combined with practical SWM Logbook training, the workshop equipped participants with tools for a sustainable future. A heartfelt thank you to DENR-EMB 11 and all involved for their dedication!
