BUTUAN CITY — A Cagayan de Oro brewer defeated 38 competitors from across Mindanao to claim the championship at the inaugural Brewtuan Brewers League competition held Saturday at BARcada in this city.

Jan Bretlex Wong Ablanque, owner of the pop-up café Brew.kol and a member of the Cagayan de Oro Specialty Coffee Collective, won the title after overcoming a recent period of professional burnout.

"I lost my groove for the past few months as I was feeling so uninspired," Ablanque said. "But the support system of my team motivated me to compete. The late-night brewing sessions and even the bad-tasting brews reminded me why I love brewing so much. This trophy isn't just for me but for the whole team."

Organized by the Butuan Coffee Community, the June 13 event aimed to showcase regional talent and highlight local specialty coffee beans. The multi-day gathering also featured a Latte Art Throwdown on Friday.

Ablanque said the recognition validates countless hours of practice and serves as a stepping-stone for his career.

"I want to keep learning and sharing that knowledge about specialty coffee, and hopefully represent our region in higher-level competitions," he said.

The event was part of the Mindanao Coffee Collective Brewdown Butuan leg.
