Yesterday, 11 June 2026, the Xavier Ateneo community gathered at Lucas Hall to commemorate the 128th Philippine Independence Day through Kalayaan 2026.

Directed by Dr. Hobart P. Savior, the program featured music, dance, reflections, and patriotic performances that paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of our national heroes, whose unwavering love for country secured the freedom we cherish today. The celebration also served as a reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and active citizenship.

As we reflected on our nation's journey, we embraced the spirit of Kalayaan x Kinabukasan x Kasaysayan—honoring our past, celebrating our present, and inspiring hope for the future.

Together, let us continue to build a stronger and more compassionate Philippines for generations to come.

Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! 🇵🇭

[PHOTOS] On June 11, Xavier University commemorated Philippine Independence Day at the Lucas Hall Grounds. Enjoined by students, faculty, and alumni alike, the event honored the historic declaration of freedom and the enduring spirit of the Filipino nation.
Directed by Dr. Hobart P. Savior, the program featured powerful cultural performances from the XU Glee Club, XU Band, Xavier Philharmonia, XU Cultural Dance Troupe, Dulaang Atenista, The Xavier Stage, and the XCCA Artist Center—uniting the university community in a shared celebration of patriotism, social justice, and nation-building.
University President Fr. Mars P. Tan, SJ, celebrates the institution's role in addressing today's pressing social issues, particularly national sovereignty, stating: “Education is supposed to open our eyes. In XU, as socially involved and educated individuals, we’re providing clear and conscious education, not just for the youth, but also for our brothers and sisters in society.”
In a speech, XU CSG President Nicholai Wong sheds light on the true meaning of liberty, reminding the community that "independence is not a moment. It is a discipline." He emphasized that true freedom is not a static gift from the past, but a living project that must be actively won, re-won, and defended today.
Ultimately, the celebration serves as a reminder to every Xavier Atenean that the project of nation-building remains unfinished. Grounded in conscience and courage, the community steps into the future ready to safeguard the truth, defend national sovereignty, and actively live out the promise of true independence.
Viva, Xavier Ateneo!

The program also featured performances by the XU Glee Club, XU Cultural Dance Troupe, XCCA Artists Center, and One Basic Education. Members of the community then tied red, yellow, and blue ribbons as a symbol of love for the country before joining the pledge of action for better citizenship and a better Philippines led by Nicholai Wong.

National Flag Days 2026

As the nation commemorates the National Flag Days from 28 May to 12 June 2026, we remember the 128th Anniversary of the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite, the first military victory of the Filipino people against Spanish forces during the Philippine Revolution. On 28 May 1898, the Philippine Revolutionary Army courageously faced the Spanish troops led by Leopoldo Garcia Peña. Despite being outnumbered and lacking ammunition, the Filipino forces prevailed, leading to the surrender of the Spanish troops and the historic unfurling of the Philippine flag in victory.

This commemoration also ushers in the celebration of Kalayaan 2026, marking the 128th Year of Philippine Independence.

These national celebrations remind us of the courage, sacrifice, patriotism, and unity of our forebears in shaping the Filipino nation.

With this, Xavier University continues to fulfill its mission as a Filipino university by promoting awareness, appreciation, understanding, and protection of Filipino culture, heritage, and history.

As we honor our flag and freedom, may we continue to become responsible stewards of our identity as a people and as a nation.

Mabuhay ang Watawat ng Pilipinas.
Mabuhay ang Kalayaan.
Mabuhay ang Sambayanang Pilipino.
