The month of July is observed as Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing public awareness about one of the most common viral illnesses affecting infants and young children.
HFMD is a contagious disease caused by viruses that spread through close personal contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated surfaces. It commonly presents with fever, painful sores inside the mouth, and rashes or blisters on the hands, feet, and sometimes other parts of the body. Although most cases are mild and resolve on their own, the disease can spread quickly, especially in homes, schools, and childcare centers, making prevention a shared responsibility.
The best way to reduce the risk of infection is by practicing proper hygiene every day. Regular handwashing with soap and clean water, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and keeping sick children at home until they have fully recovered are simple yet effective ways to help stop the spread of the virus.
Parents, guardians, teachers, and caregivers also play an important role in recognizing the early signs and symptoms of HFMD. Prompt consultation with a healthcare professional and proper care can help ensure a faster recovery while preventing further transmission within the community.
As we observe HFMD Awareness Month, let us continue to promote healthy habits, strengthen disease prevention efforts, and work together to create a safer and healthier environment for every child.
Awareness leads to prevention. Prevention protects lives. โค๏ธ๐ฉน
