Held on October 9, 2025 at the Canuctan Hall, Aquino and Amos showcased an impressive performance, embodying both intelligence and confidence that reflect the excellence of the Environmental Science community.

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐘𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥: 𝐄𝐧𝐒𝐒𝐎'𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝.

August 01, 2025 – The Environmental Science Student Organization (EnSSO) held its officer elections on Thursday at the Physics room, ushering in a new set of student leaders committed to continuing the organization’s environmental advocacy.

A total of 44 Environmental Science students cast their votes, raising their hands in support of the candidates they believed were most deserving to lead. The election served not only as a selection process but also as a reflection of the students’ trust and unity in choosing leaders who share their passion for environmental leadership.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 (𝐆𝐈𝐒): 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡

To enhance knowledge and skills in Geographic Information System (GIS) applications for Environmental Research, a "Training on Basic Geographic Information System (GIS): Tool for Environmental Research" was conducted from March 6 to 7. The training was spearheaded by BS Environmental Science Program Head, EnP. Edgar I. Peque, alongside GIS experts Mr. Darwin B. Anir and Mr. Karl John F. Obina.

The training began with clear discussions from the EnP. Edgar I. Peque who provided an overview of the Global Positioning System (GPS) & Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The session highlighted the importance of these technologies for data collection, mapping and spatial analysis for environmental research and decisions.

After the discussion, Darwin B. Anir and Karl John F. Obina led the way in hands-on training sessions. They guided participants through exporting collected data and explored various basic tools of GIS. Additionally, the use of Google Earth has been demonstrated and practical applications for spatial visualization and environmental monitoring have been presented.

This training successfully equips participants with basic GIS skills essential to conducting environmental research. The integration of GPS and GIS plays a critical role in data analysis, resource management and environmental planning. This is useful not only for researchers but also for local communities. Through understanding and using these technologies, environmental experts can make more and more informed decisions to promote sustainable development and effectively overcome ecological challenges.

𝗘𝗻𝗦𝗦𝗢 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗬𝗖𝗔𝗙 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁

Borongan City, Eastern Samar – December 9-10, 2024

Young leaders from across Eastern Samar came together at Golden Creek Farm in Brgy. Calico-an, Borongan City, to share stories of change, learning, and resilience at the Bloomberg Philanthropist Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) Learning and Planning Event. The two-day gathering brought 13 youth organizations, including the Environmental Science Students' Organization (EnSSO), to celebrate their journey in tackling climate issues.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 1: Sharing Stories and Lessons

The first day was all about collaboration and learning. Each group presented their projects, discussing both successes and challenges along the way. For organizations like EnSSO, it was an opportunity to showcase creative solutions to environmental challenges in their communities.

The project implementor and monitoring team, offered thoughtful feedback and encouragement, highlighting the remarkable dedication of the participants. Later, the youth shared personal reflections, celebrating what made them proud during their project journeys. It was a day filled with inspiration and a renewed sense of purpose.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 2: A Night of Recognition and Celebration

The second day culminated in the Social and Recognition Night, officially opened by For. Jojito B. Acla, who welcomed participants and commended their efforts in making a tangible impact on climate action.

During the ceremony, EnSSO received a Certificate of Recognition for their role as a grantee and youth implementor of Bloomberg Philanthropist YCAF. Certificates of Appreciation were also awarded to EnP. Vicky Mae C. Gavilan, the monitoring team in charge, and Eastern Samar State University for their support.

EnSSO achieved an additional milestone by earning a special award as the first youth organization to submit 50% of their liquidation report, alongside LNHS - SSLG YORP.

This event highlighted Borongan City’s role as one of 150 cities worldwide benefiting from Bloomberg Philanthropist YCAF, a program under the Climate Resilient Cities (CRC) initiative by USAID and Catholic Relief Services. Locally, the initiative is supported by the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), and the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation Office.

For the youth leaders involved, the event was more than a celebration—it was a reminder of the power of collective action in creating a more sustainable future. As the curtains closed, their shared stories stood as proof of what’s possible when young minds unite to protect the planet.

𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐀𝐂𝐒 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠!

𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟕, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 | The second day of training for the Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) is underway, with participants from Barangays Pepelitan, Canlaray, and Maybacong actively implementing the actual steps and protocols of WACS. Equipped with the necessary gear and tools, the participants are safely and efficiently conducting key activities such as waste sorting, weighing, and recording identified waste samples.

The training is set to conclude tomorrow - December 8, 2024, with the presentation and discussion of results and analysis.

𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟔, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 | The Environmental Science Students’ Organization (EnSSO) officially launched a youth-led Solid Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) training on December 6, 2024, at the Barangay Gymnasium of Brgy. Pepelitan, Borongan City.

This three-day program aims to equip SK officials, youth group members, and barangay constituents with the necessary methodologies for conducting WACS in line with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) guidelines – pursuant to Sections 17b and 19 of RA 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

The training was conceptualized by EnSSO to bridge the gap between waste management practices and the need for baseline data in developing strategic and data-driven solid waste management plans.

The event gathered participants from the coastal barangays of Pepelitan, Canlaray, and Maybacong, with 10 representatives invited from each barangay. These barangays were chosen as pilot areas for the initiative. “𝐼 𝑎𝑚 ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑑. 𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑏𝑖𝑔 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑝 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑡𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝑎 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎-𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,” said Engr. Joseph B. Lagdaan, the City Solid Waste Management Officer of Borongan City.

EnP. Edgar I. Peque, a faculty member of the Environmental Science Department, served as the resource speaker for the training. The module he developed offers a simplified WACS process to ensure participants gain a solid foundation in the methodology, with plans for follow-up training sessions in the future.

This initiative is part of a series of activities funded by the Bloomberg Youth for Climate Action Fund in collaboration with the local government unit of Borongan City.
