When young people turn waste into art, they also turn awareness into action.

On September 14, 2026, the Boac Moriones Arena came alive with the creativity, passion, and environmental commitment of young leaders and advocates during the Trash to Art: Environmental Sustainability Youth Summit, organized through the partnership of the Marinduque Council for Environmental Concerns, Inc. (MACEC) and the Boac Local Youth Development Office (LYDO).

Carrying the theme “Critical Youth, Nurturing Nature: Artistry Waste,” the summit created a meaningful space where environmental awareness, youth participation, creativity, and responsible stewardship of creation came together.

More than an art activity, Trash to Art challenged young people to look at waste differently to see that materials often dismissed as “trash” can still have value, purpose, and a second life when placed in the hands of creative and responsible stewards.

From waste to possibility. From creativity to advocacy. From awareness to action.

The program opened with a prayer, the singing of the National Anthem, and welcome remarks from Mr. Joven S. Jinang, LYDO Officer, who highlighted the activity as the first-ever collaborative initiative of the Boac LYDO and MACEC, marking an important milestone in strengthening youth-led environmental action in the municipality.

Hon. Mark Anthony E. Seño, Municipal Vice Mayor, also expressed his support for the initiative, inspiring the youth to become more than social media influencers but environmental influencers who create positive change in their communities.

“Sa makabagong panahon maraming gustong maging influencer, pero mas kahangahanga kung magiging environmental influencer na magbibigay ng positibong epekto. Ang basura sa iba ay sining sa mata ng isang katiwalang kabataan.”

The summit also deepened participants’ understanding of responsible waste management through discussions on Republic Act No. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, including proper waste classification, recycling, and responsible disposal.

This was complemented by a discussion on Republic Act No. 11898 or the Extended Producer Responsibility Act, emphasizing that environmental responsibility does not begin only in government offices or institutions—it starts in our homes, families, communities, and everyday choices.

These important discussions were shared by Mr. Jovert Quindoza, DENR-EMB Environment Monitoring Officer, while Ms. Michelle S. Macariola emphasized the potential of waste as a resource:

“May pera sa basura kung ito ay bibigyang halaga at gawing sining.”

The afternoon brought learning to life. Youth participants transformed recyclable and reusable materials into creative artworks, demonstrating that environmental advocacy can be expressed not only through words and campaigns, but also through imagination, innovation, and art.

The artworks were evaluated based on originality, creativity, and environmental impact, showcasing not only artistic talent but also the participants’ understanding of sustainability and responsible waste management.

The summit concluded with the awarding of certificates and a closing program, celebrating the young participants who dared to think critically, create creatively, and act responsibly for the environment.

Youth stewards of Creation, stepping up for a cleaner and greener community!
