The Anthropology Organization (TAO) is a duly recognized academic-oriented organization based at the University of the Philippines, established for the appreciation and understanding of the field of Anthropology in our society. TAO was constituted in the UP Centennial Year (2008) with the mission of making a community that celebrates and respects cultural pluralism and relativism in the world and

𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗮 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗸𝗼𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗱?

Para sa disiplina ng agham ng tao, ang fieldwork ay pakikipamuhay kasama ang komunidad at hindi lamang paraan ng pagkuha ng datos. Ito ay isang moral na pangako para sa mga komunidad na ating katuwang sa pananaliksik at sinisilbihan. Bilang mga mananaliksik, ang empirikal na katotohanan ay hindi lamang matatagpuan sa loob ng mga libro o sa mga diskurso sa silid-aralan. Ang katotohanan ay mas masidhi nating matatagpuan sa pakikinig sa mga tinig ng masa. Pinag-aaralan natin ang tao dahil tayo ay bahagi ng iisang lipunan.

Sa kabila ng marangal na layuning ito, bakit pilit na binabansagan bilang terorismo ang pagpunta sa mga komunidad? Ang pagtungo nina Alyssa Alano at Maureen Keil Santuyo, mga kapwa nating mga mag-aaral na nagtungo sa Toboso, Negros Occidental upang ilapat ang kanilang natutunan, ay mataas na uri ng pagsasabuhay ng teorya at praktika.

Mariing kinukondena ng The Anthropology Organization ang lahat ng anyo ng red-tagging. Ang pagbabansag sa mga researcher, community organizers, at mga progresibong grupo bilang mga kalaban ng estado ay isang direktang pag-atake sa kalayaang akademiko at sa batayang karapatang pantao. Ang panunupil na ito ay naglalayong putulin ang ugnayan ng mga intelektuwal at ng masa at hadlangan ang paglalahad ng katotohanan sa kanayunan.

𝗔𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮 𝗹𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗮𝗽𝘄𝗮, 𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗴-𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝘀𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗴-𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗺 𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗶𝗻. Ang tunguhin ng ating fieldwork ay ang pagpapalaya. Hangga't may mga komunidad na nakasadlak sa kahirapan at dahas, mananatili tayong maglalakad sa mga bundok at kalsada, dala ang panulat at prinsipyo, tungo sa isang lipunang tunay na malaya at makatarungan.

Kami ay lubos na nakikiramay sa pagpaslang kina Alyssa Alano at Maureen Keil Santuyo, gayundin sa kanilang mga kasamahan sa Toboso 19. Sa gitna ng trahedyang ito, kami ay nakikiisa sa panawagan na bigyang-katarungan ang Toboso 19 at itigil ang tumitinding karahasan sa mga komunidad ng Negros. Hindi kailanman magiging makatarungan ang pagkitil sa buhay ng mga indibidwal na ang tanging hangarin ay maglingkod at makiisa sa pakikibaka ng mga magsasaka at masa. Naninindigan kami kasama ang mga naulilang pamilya sa pagpapanagot sa mga may-akda ng karahasang ito at sa pagtataguyod ng tunay na kapayapaang nakabatay sa hustisya.

The UP Baguio community welcomed our esteemed friends from National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Taiwan, last April 6, 2026, for a meaningful cultural exchange between students and faculty members. The event was held at Teatro Amianan with the guidance of Prof. Io Jularbal, CAC Dean and Prof. Lelet San Luis, DASP Chairperson.

Facilitated by Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Leah E. Abayao and Senior Lecturer in Anthropology Karminn Daytec Yañgot, faculty members Orland Abao and Cj Colinn Fernandez from the Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology (DASP) and BASS students shared an afternoon of connection with undergraduate and graduate students from the International Indigenous Interdisciplinary Program of NSYSU, headed by their Chairperson, Professor Chia-hao Hsu.

The afternoon’s highlights included:

𝘼𝙘𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙇𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨
Insights on Austronesian history and the cultural similarities between Taiwan and the Philippines due to cultural diffusion, delivered by VCAA Abayao and Professor Hsu.

𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣
The exchange featured a vibrant demonstration of Cordilleran instruments facilitated by the PIC and CCA, headed by Mr. Jun Senin. This was followed by a moving performance of indigenous songs and dance from the NSYSU students, offering a beautiful glimpse into the living traditions of Taiwan.

𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣
