Sometimes you can go about your day for years, feeling completely fine - while high blood pressure quietly strains your heart, damages blood vessels and stresses your kidneys.

The good news: prevention and control are possible.

Early diagnosis, access to affordable high blood pressure medicines and healthy daily habits can greatly lower these risks.

People are living longer worldwide, but not healthier. The global gap between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy widened from 8.8 years in 1990 to 10.7 years in 2023, suggesting more years are being lived with disease and disability.

People around the world are living longer than ever before but spending more of those additional years in poor health, according to a new Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study published in The Lancet Public Health.

Exercise Supercharges Hormone Transport to the Brain

Research shows exercise prompts extracellular vesicles to carry far more POMC, offering a new explanation for how activity influences mood, stress, and brain function.

Physical exercise triggers extracellular vesicles (EVs)—tiny particles in the blood—to act as temporary transport shuttles for key hormone precursors.

Lifestyle interventions must become a core part of mental health care. 🧠 ⛹️💃🍎🍊

“The evidence is clear. Lifestyle interventions — when delivered in a way that meets the needs of people living with mental illness — can reduce psychiatric symptoms, improve physical health, and extend life expectancy. The task before us is no longer to prove efficacy, but to embed these interventions into the core of mental health care.”

A 10-week study of people 65 or older found that doing rigorous mental exercises for 30 minutes a day increased levels of the chemical messenger acetylcholine by 2.3% in a brain area involved in attention and memory.

Even healthy brains decline with age. Here's what you can do
The increase "is not huge," says Étienne de Villers-Sidani, a neurologist at McGill University in Montreal. "But it's significant, considering that you get a 2.5% decrease per decade normally just with aging."

Scientists have found the first compelling evidence that cognitive training can boost levels of a brain chemical that typically declines as people age.

Exercise Boost Memory Across All Ages

A sweeping review of over 2,700 clinical trials confirms that regular exercise significantly boosts brain function and memory for people of all ages.

Researchers found that even low- to moderate-intensity activities like yoga, Tai Chi, and active video games enhance cognitive health.

Improvements were seen in memory, executive function, and overall cognition, especially in children, adolescents, and individuals with ADHD.

Notably, the benefits often appeared within one to three months of beginning exercise, emphasizing how even small, consistent efforts can quickly make a difference.

The findings suggest that engaging, low-impact activities are highly accessible and effective for cognitive improvement.

Experts now advocate incorporating exercise into public health and clinical guidelines to help combat cognitive decline and support lifelong brain health.

New research finds that nearly any form of exercise can enhance brain function and memory across the lifespan.

“The findings showed that for each 10 minutes spent on strength training per week, telomeres were 6.7 base pairs longer, on average. Therefore, 90 minutes per week of strength training was predictive of telomeres that were 60.3 base pairs longer, on average. Because each year of chronological age was associated with telomeres that were 15.47 base pairs shorter in this national sample, 90 minutes per week of strength training was associated with 3.9 years less biological ageing, on average. This interpretation suggests that an hour of strength training three times per week (180 total minutes) was associated with 7.8 years less biological ageing.”

New research published in Biology has demonstrated that regular strength training could knock almost a decade off your age
