Christmas is one of the most important feasts in all of Christianity, second only to Easter, as it celebrates the birth of our Lord. It is the culmination of the incarnation, when Christ himself became man, so fulfilling the prophecies of old. It is from this that we get the name โEmmanuelโ or โGod is with usโ. The incarnation is a uniquely Christian teaching, the divine choosing to become a mortal to save them from death. Because of this belief, God becomes both immanent and transcendent. Thus, we have the two natures of Christ in one unified body.
The preparation for Christmas begins with Advent, a time of prayer and reflection. It is a time of contemplation and waiting for the joys to come. Then, at midnight mass, we celebrate the birth of our Lord. The nativity scenes highlight the role of Joseph and Mary as models of faith and obedience. Christmas is not just about celebrations and fun; it is also about the birth of our Lord and how we as Christians must live up to the example he set later in his life.
The true spirit of Christmas is not in buying useless goods, but in charity, compassion, and giving. Like the three wise men, we must seek to uplift our neighbors and bring joy to them, just as our savior had taught us to do, for Jesus himself said in Matthew 22:39, โAnd the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself". Thus, we are called to love and give charity to the poor, sick, and unfortunate. As Christians, it is our duty to follow the path of Christ, and the path of Christ requires us to be charitable to those in need.
