Paws Up for Safety:RA 9482 – The Anti-Rabies Act of 2007

"Protect pets. Protect people. Rabies ends with responsibility."

Republic Act No. 9482 is a national law focused on controlling and eliminating rabies in both animals and humans. Passed in 2007, it requires both government agencies and pet owners to work together to stop the spread of this deadly disease.

•What You Need to Know as a Pet Owner:
1. Vaccinate your dogs every year. It’s required by law.

2. Register your pets with your barangay or city vet office.

3. Keep your pets properly leashed or contained.

4. Report any dog bite incidents within 24 hours.

5. If your unvaccinated dog bites someone, you are required to help cover medical expenses.

•What Local Government Units Must Do:

Conduct regular mass vaccination campaigns

Keep a database of registered and vaccinated pets

Control stray dog populations

Educate the public about rabies prevention

Penalties for Pet Owners:

P2,000 fine for not vaccinating your dog

P10,000 to P25,000 fine for refusing observation or not helping bite victims

P500 fine for letting your dog roam without a leash

P5,000 to P20,000 fine and jail time for dog meat trading or using electrocution for euthanasia

Foreigners who violate this law may be deported after serving sentence

This law is not just about punishment. It is about preventing harm and saving lives by promoting responsible pet care.

Did you know? In the Philippines, animals are protected by Republic Act No. 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, strengthened by RA 10631. This law prohibits cruelty, abuse, and neglect of all animals, whether they're pets, farm animals, or strays.

Animals have the right to proper care, shelter, and love.
Let’s speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
