Christmas is one of the most important feasts in all of Christianity, second only to Easter, as it celebrates the birth of our Lord. It is the culmination of the incarnation, when Christ himself became man, so fulfilling the prophecies of old. It is from this that we get the name โ€œEmmanuelโ€ or โ€œGod is with usโ€. The incarnation is a uniquely Christian teaching, the divine choosing to become a mortal to save them from death. Because of this belief, God becomes both immanent and transcendent. Thus, we have the two natures of Christ in one unified body.

The preparation for Christmas begins with Advent, a time of prayer and reflection. It is a time of contemplation and waiting for the joys to come. Then, at midnight mass, we celebrate the birth of our Lord. The nativity scenes highlight the role of Joseph and Mary as models of faith and obedience. Christmas is not just about celebrations and fun; it is also about the birth of our Lord and how we as Christians must live up to the example he set later in his life.

The true spirit of Christmas is not in buying useless goods, but in charity, compassion, and giving. Like the three wise men, we must seek to uplift our neighbors and bring joy to them, just as our savior had taught us to do, for Jesus himself said in Matthew 22:39, โ€œAnd the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself". Thus, we are called to love and give charity to the poor, sick, and unfortunate. As Christians, it is our duty to follow the path of Christ, and the path of Christ requires us to be charitable to those in need.

Today is the fourth sunday of Advent. Let us intensify our longing for the coming of God as Christmas draws closer and closer. Let us use this time to avail the sacraments so that we may be prepared to welcome Him, who is our hope, our peace, our joy, and our love. May the Radiant Dawn come swiftly to shine on us who dwell in the shadow of death. Amen

Today is the third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sundam from the incipit of the Mass introit which means "rejoice". We rejoice even in this season of penance, because not only is Christmas near, but the coming of Christ is always near. This Gaudete Sunday, may we be reminded of this and continue to await Him in joyful expectation always.

"Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you."

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, which celebrates the preservation of Mary's soul from sin at the very beginning of her existence. Blessed Pius IX infallibly defined this as dogma in the Papal Bull "Ineffabilis Deus" in 1854. Let us focus on the necessity of this grace granted by God to Mary in order for her willing cooperation with the will of God.

In the willing disobedience of Adam and Eve, we have lost our union with God, and our will has become disordered. But God in His great mercy for His people has given us grace in order to give us the strength to follow His will. Despite the grace which God gives us, we still have a fallen nature which is not naturally inclined to God's will. In the salvation of humanity, God still wished to keep His gift to mankind of free will, but in order to accomplish such, God needed humanity to cooperate with salvation out of free will, which required complete grace. For Mary to become the Mother of the Incarnate Word, it would have been necessary for her to give complete and willing consent to God's will, and so the Redeemer in anticipation of the Sacrifice of the Cross has saved Mary from the stain of sin at the very moment of her conception. Thus being full of God's grace, Mary was born in perfect liberty from the slavery of sin, and her will was not impeded by such.
Mary's "Fiat" was a result of freedom and not of fear nor coercion. But where Eve had freedom and abused it by her disobedience to God, Mary used this freedom in order to love God. This love was only possible because God filled her with grace and love, grace which God bestowed upon her at the beginning of her existence and which God continues to pour upon her all her life. Through her free consent to God's will, our Savior entered the world; he suffered, died, and rose from the dead that we may be delivered from the bonds of sin and be free to love and obey the will of the Father. May God deign to liberate us always from sin so that we can submit ourselves to His will with freedom, for the salvation of all mankind.

O Mary, conceived without original sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Let us pray for our brothers and sisters that God may strengthen them in their tribulation and wear red as a remembrance of both the blood of Christ shed on the cross and the blood of our persecuted brethren.

Laudetur Iesus Christus! This Sunday marks the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe, more commonly referred to as Christ the King Sunday. On this day, we continue to wholly submit ourselves to the King of Glory who is, who was, and who is to come. He is a King unlike the kings of this world, for though He is above us, He has condescended to us lowly men and made us His subjects, and as His subjects, we shall receive Him with great joy when He shall return.

The Glory of Jesus had always been with Him before the creation of the world. His rule was the source of peace for all His creation. However, as sin entered the world, it brought disorder to all of creation, but the peace of Christ never truly went away. God continued to reign over creation, particularly humanity, as He led them through His great plan of salvation. He established a kingdom and placed David on its throne. But even as many kings came and went and even as Israel became subject to many kingdoms, God remained King over all of His people.

But God, in His compassion, descended from Heaven to become man. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became incarnate through the Virgin Mary, a descendant of King David. Jesus Christ became enthroned on Earth, not with glory but with humiliation; His crown was of thorns and His throne was of the Cross. But through His humiliation, Jesus Christ was highly exalted, and through His death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven, we became subjects to Christ, not as a slave is to his master but as a child is to his father.

Christ will eventually return to us in the same way the apostles saw Him ascend into Heaven, and He shall reign for a milenium, bringing about peace and righteousness. When Jesus Christ returns, He will not return as a Savior for sinners, but as a Judge for those living and dead. For the unrighteous, this is a great cause for fear, but for us, His beloved, this is a moment of relief, because after which, we shall reign with Him forever in the new Jerusalem.

When this feast was established by Pius XI, it was celebrated on the last Sunday of October, which at the time fell on the 31st of October, immediately preceding All Saints Day. This was to show that Christ is King of both the living and the dead.
Paul VI moved the feast to the last Sunday of the liturgical year, before Advent, in relation to Christ being the beginning and end of everything. May we who are about to conclude the liturgical year continue to be vigilant and hopeful for the coming of Christ. When He arrives, may He not see us in a state of unpreparedness but in a state of joyful expectation of our King. Let us pray for Christ to give us hope for the coming of His Kingdom and let us pray that He will deign to let us reign with Him, our only God and King. Tempora bona veniant, Pax Christi veniat, Regnum Christi veniat!

Today is the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, a sign of unity within the Body of Christ, the Church.

The Major Papal, Patriarchal, and Roman Archbasilica, Metropolitan and Primatial Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior, and Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in Lateran, Mother and Head of all Churches in Rome and in the World, is the Cathedral Church of Rome and the oldest of the Four Major Basilicas, which also include St. Mary Major, St. Peter's Basilica, and St. Paul Outside the Walls.

Being the Cathedral of the Roman Pontiff, it serves as a visible head among all churches in the City of Rome as well as the Mother Church where the Pope acts as the Universal Shepherd for all the Christian Faithful. As we celebrate the Dedication of the "Mother and Head of all Churches in Rome and in the World", let us pray, as the temple of the Body of Christ, for the Universal Church, in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father Leo XIV.

Today, we observe All Souls Day, a time when we remember all of the deceased faithful of our Holy Mother Church. This occasion is held in particular for those souls who have been saved but remain in Purgatory.

In Catholic ecclesiology, the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, is divided into three states: The Church Militant, which refers to the Church on Earth which strives to fight against evil and sin as soldiers of Christ, the Church Triumphant, which consists of the saints who enjoy the beatific vision in Heaven, and the Church Suffering, which consists of the holy souls suffering in Purgatory and awaiting to come to the joy of beatific vision.

Yesterday, we have celebrated the Church Triumphant in veneration of the holiness of the saints. Today, we remember the Church Suffering, who depend on us in order to hasten their entrance into Heaven. We can help our beloved in Purgatory by means of offering prayers, sacrifices, and indulgences. Indulgences in particular, are special graces that can be applied to ourselves or to the holy souls in order to lessen time in Purgatory. We can actually receive indulgences for the souls in Purgatory this November, which will completely remit time in Purgatory for the suffering souls who receive them.

An indulgence can be granted to the faithful who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed; the indulgence is plenary each day from November 1-8, whereas on other days of the year, it is only a partial indulgence. A plenary indulgence is also granted to those who piously visit a church on November 2; in visiting the church it is required that one Our Father and the Creed be recited. In acquiring plenary indulgences, the usual conditions are to be followed: sacramental Confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father while being detatched from all sin. The condition of praying for the intention of the Holy Father is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary. A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once in the course of the day.

Each day, the holy souls in Purgatory turn to us in their suffering and ask for our prayers. Let us not waste any opportunity to help them enter heaven, especially the prayers, sacrifices, and indulgences that we can offer God today on their behalf. When they enter Heaven, they will never forget the help we have done for them; they will intercede on our behalf together with the saints to God. When it our turn to depart from this world, our greatest consolation will be the prayer we have offered for the holy souls in purgatory; and the many souls we have prayed for in the hour of their greatest need, will in turn pray for us in the hour of our greatest need. "Have pity on me, have pity on me, at least you my friends" (Job 19:21).

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Requiescant in pace. Amen.

The first day of November marks the Solemnity of all Saints. We celebrated this day in honor of all the men and women who have entered Heaven, and in particular, those who have lived holy and extraordinary lives worthy of imitation.

To be a saint is not necessarily to be someone who has lived a virtuous life, but rather, it is simply being with God after bodily death. The saints were once sinners but were saved because they accepted God's call to become holy.

Just like the saints, we are all called to become holy as God is Holy. And just like the saints, let us answer this call by growing in virtue and so join them, praising God in the ages of ages.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, intercede for us!

Today is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. This feast was instituted under the title of Our Lady of Victory by Pope St. Pius V after the triumph of the Christian nations over the Ottoman Navy at the Battle of Lepanto through the recitation of the Rosary. Later, Pope Gregory XIII changed the name of the feast into Feast of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Rosary, according to tradition, was given to St. Dominic in an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary during the year 1208 in the church of Prouille as a way to combat the Albigensian heresy. The subsequent defeat of this heresy led to viewing the recitation of the Rosary as an instrument in finding refuge and comfort, strength and confidence in facing and overcoming the difficulties encountered in life, finding in the Rosary beads a โ€œshieldโ€ to defeat heresy. Because of St. Dominic and the Order of Preachers, devotion to the Rosary began to spread throughout Europe. In 1572, Pius V formalized the number and content of the Mysteries of the Rosary and actively promoted its recitation.

Very recently, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines called for a "National Day of Prayer and Public Repentance" on October 7, amid the Philippines' struggle with calamities and corruption. Let us ask through the intercession of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary for Jesus Christ to come and save us from the trouble of our time. May we always find peace and consolation, hope and unity in the Rosary, as we continue to journey to eternal life amid the turmoil of our time.
