PHILIPPINE RED CROSS LEADS NATIONWIDE AID EFFORT FOR COMMUNITIES HIT BY BACK-TO-BACK DISASTERS IN 2025

MANDALUYONG CITY โ€” The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues its large-scale humanitarian operations following the back-to-back disasters in 2025, including earthquakes in Cebu and Davao Oriental and Typhoon Tino and Supertyphoon Uwan. Today, Multipurpose Cash Grant (MPCG) distributions are simultaneously underway on-site in Negros Occidental, Davao Oriental, Cebu, Palawan, and Catanduanesโ€”reaching 2,138 families with Php 17.1 million in assistance.

To ensure efficient and cost-effective operations amid rising fuel prices, the simultaneous distributions are being conducted through centralized Zoom coordination, allowing PRC teams across multiple locations to synchronize efforts while minimizing travel-related expenses.

This is a part of PRCโ€™s ongoing response to reach over 8,000 families across 6 provinces, 16 municipalities, and 68 barangays. Since the disasters struck, PRC has provided search and rescue, emergency medical services, food, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and cash assistance, alongside shelter assistance, livelihood aid, and community training to strengthen resilience.

Overall, PRC will provide over Php 301 million in total assistance for the affected communities. This includes Php 64 million in cash aid, with nearly Php 30 million already given to 3,748 families and another Php 34 million to be distributed today and on April 8, 9, and 14 to a total of 4,256 families. About Php 125 million is allocated for recovery programs such as shelter and livelihood support.

These operations are made possible through the Philippine Red Crossโ€™s fundraising efforts and the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the German Red Cross (GRC).

PRCโ€™s continued presence builds on its long-standing experience responding to major disasters nationwide. From the 2013 Bohol earthquake and Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Eastern Visayas and parts of Cebu and Palawan, to the 2019 Mindanao earthquakes and Typhoon Odette (Rai) in 2021 affecting Cebu, Palawan, Negros Occidental, and Catanduanes, PRC has consistently provided sustained assistance, ensuring communities receive both immediate relief and long-term recovery support.

PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon said, โ€œDisasters may come one after another, but our commitment does not waver. From the moment lives are at risk, we respondโ€”saving lives, providing relief, and standing with communities until they regain stability and dignity.โ€

PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang added, โ€œOur goal is not only to provide aid, but to help communities recover safely and sustainably. Through our partnerships with IFRC, ICRC, and GRC, and investments in training and preparedness, we ensure families are better equipped to face future disasters."

Women have always played a powerful role in building stronger and more compassionate communities. From responding during disasters to supporting health initiatives and community programs, their dedication reflects the true spirit of volunteerism and service. Through courage, empathy, and determination, women bring hope and support to those who need it most. โค๏ธ

With this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œThe Power of Women in Service to Humanity,โ€ we celebrate the inspiring women volunteers of RCY Negros Occidental. Their commitment reminds us that service is not defined by age or background, but by the willingness to care, act, and uplift others.

โ™€๏ธ To the women who lead, serve, and inspire within our communities, thank you for being a driving force of compassion and humanity. Your service continues to create meaningful impact and brighter tomorrows.

Together, we honor the power of women in shaping a more humane and resilient world. ๐ŸŒโœจ
