H.E. Unny Sankar’s distinguished diplomatic career exemplifies sophisticated economic statecraft and the art of building resilient, mutually beneficial international partnerships in a complex global landscape. As Minister of Economic Affairs at the Embassy of Malaysia in Beijing, he continues to play a pivotal role in deepening Malaysia–China bilateral economic relations through strategic frameworks that enhance investment flows, trade facilitation, technology collaboration, and supply chain resilience.

His earlier leadership at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Malaysia was instrumental in shaping the country’s external economic architecture. Notably, he led the establishment of the Belt and Road Initiative National Secretariat (BRINS Malaysia) in 2017, driving the effective operationalization of BRI projects in alignment with national priorities. He has also overseen the coordination of the Five-Year Program for Economic and Trade Cooperation between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China.

H.E. Unny Sankar’s contributions extend to high-level multilateral negotiations, including serving as ASEAN Lead for the Economic and Technical Cooperation Working Group in the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) 3.0 upgrade. He has simultaneously strengthened Malaysia’s economic ties with the European Union through the implementation of EU ARISE+ Malaysia programs and targeted trade and investment initiatives. His civil service journey began in 2003 at the Ministry of Health Malaysia, where he contributed to critical Free Trade Agreement negotiations, with a strong emphasis on intellectual property rights, trade in goods and services, and public health safeguards.

A highly accomplished policy expert, H.E. Unny Sankar holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (Honors) from the University of Malaya and a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University. His commitment to excellence and public service is further reflected in his tenure as Honorary Secretary of the Harvard Club of Malaysia and his recognition in Britishpedia’s *Successful People in Malaysia* in 2023.

The Icons of Change Global Secretariat proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Izabela Pereira Watts as Ambassador for Sustainable Development Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (Australia), under the Icons of Change Leadership, Democratic Governance & Peacebuilding Fellowship.

A distinguished international development expert, peacebuilding practitioner, academic leader, and author, Dr. Izabela Pereira Watts has dedicated her career to strengthening democratic governance, advancing peace processes, promoting inclusive institutions, and fostering global cooperation across complex post-conflict and development contexts. With extensive field experience spanning Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific, she has worked with premier institutions including the United Nations, UNDP, UN Women, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Australian Federal Police.

As Democratic Governance and Political Affairs Officer with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Timor-Leste, Dr. Watts provided high-level strategic advice to the Presidential Office, National Parliament, government ministries, and civil society on democratic institutions, elections, governance reform, human rights, decentralization, and gender empowerment during a pivotal nation-building period. At the United Nations Development Programme, she designed, coordinated, and implemented 17 strategic development projects worth over US$12 million across Haiti, Timor-Leste, and Angola. These initiatives delivered impactful results in anti-corruption, justice reform, education, healthcare, infrastructure, climate resilience, social inclusion, and capacity building. Her innovative youth, sport, and social inclusion program in Haiti was renewed multiple times and successfully replicated in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

In Australia, Dr. Watts served as Senior International Gender and Inclusion Specialist with the Australian Federal Police, leading a DFAT-funded regional program across seven Southeast Asian nations to advance gender equality, anti-corruption, and the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. She has also made significant academic contributions as Senior Lecturer and Convener of the Master of International Development at the University of Canberra, and through teaching and program leadership at the University of Wollongong, Western Sydney University, UNSW, and Charles Darwin University. She mentors emerging leaders while shaping the next generation of policymakers and practitioners in international relations, peacekeeping, human security, and development.

A respected thought leader, Dr. Watts is the author of Peace or Democracy? Peacebuilding Dilemmas to Transition from Civil Wars (Routledge, 2023), which provides a critical framework for post-conflict democratic transitions. The book features a foreword by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate José Ramos-Horta and has garnered strong endorsements from senior UN officials, diplomats, and academics. A distinguished public sector executive and visionary leader with over 25 years of senior leadership experience, Kelly Gillis, CPA, ICD·D has shaped some of Canada’s most critical national priorities in housing, infrastructure, innovation, and economic development. Her career reflects a deep commitment to creating systems that deliver dignity, opportunity, and long-term prosperity — recognizing that infrastructure is not merely physical but foundational to equitable, resilient, and sustainable communities.

As Deputy Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada (2017–2024), Kelly led transformative investments in public transit, climate-resilient infrastructure, affordable housing, and community development. She played a pivotal role in advancing housing affordability, addressing homelessness, and expanding broadband access to connect rural, remote, and Indigenous communities through programs such as Connect to Innovate.

Previously, as Associate Deputy Minister at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), she championed Canada’s Inclusive Innovation Agenda, clean growth, digital economy strategies, and telecommunications policies that foster competitive and inclusive economic development.

A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) with a Bachelor of Commerce and Graduate Diploma in Public Accounting from McGill University, and an Institute of Corporate Directors designation (ICD·D), Kelly brings rigorous financial acumen, strategic insight, and ethical governance to every role. Established on February 1, 2000, by veteran journalists led by founding chairman and editor-in-chief Ninez Cacho-Olivares, the publication has evolved into a major multimedia news organization serving millions of readers across print, digital, and social media platforms.

Throughout its history, Daily Tribune has demonstrated resilience and dedication to press freedom. During the 2006 State of Emergency in the Philippines, the newspaper continued publishing despite a police raid on its headquarters, standing firm in defense of independent journalism and the public’s right to information. The episode became a significant chapter in the country's contemporary media history and underscored the publication’s commitment to a free and responsible press.

Under the leadership of publisher and president Willie Fernandez and the Concept and Information Group, Daily Tribune has expanded its reach as a modern multimedia platform while maintaining its journalistic mission. The publication has consistently highlighted issues of governance, public policy, economic development, social welfare, and national progress, contributing to informed public engagement and institutional accountability.

Its contributions to Philippine journalism have been widely recognized. Daily Tribune was named Newspaper of the Year by the Rotary Club of Manila’s Pro Patria Journalism Awards in 2017, 2021, and 2023, earning induction into the prestigious Pro Patria Journalism Hall of Fame in 2025. The Hall of Fame recognition honored the publication's sustained excellence in fair, fearless, and impactful reporting over its 25-year history.

The publication has also received accolades for its innovative multimedia coverage and digital engagement, including the Top Coverage Award and Top Social Post Award at the Epson Fusion 17 Awards, as well as the Best Brand Excellence Award from the Philippine Glitter Awards, recognizing its strong audience growth and influence across digital platforms. In addition, Daily Tribune has received multiple recognitions from public institutions for its role in effectively communicating information of national importance to Filipino communities.

For more than two decades, Daily Tribune has contributed to strengthening democratic institutions by informing citizens, facilitating public dialogue, promoting transparency, and supporting the principles of responsible journalism. Through its continued pursuit of truth, accountability, and public service, the publication has played a significant role in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 16, which calls for peaceful, just, and inclusive societies supported by strong institutions and access to information.

For its outstanding contribution to press freedom, public accountability, ethical journalism, and the strengthening of democratic institutions in the Philippines, Daily Tribune is proudly recognised as a 2026 Icon of Change.
