Jesus is the only truly reliable Person to have ever walked this earth.

Some critics purport that Christianity is a religion for the naive, claiming that our faith relies on uncritical, blind belief in a God that does not even exist. Those who think their brainpower is superior are convinced that one can't be intellectual and be a Christian. Do their assertions hold when the evidence is closely examined?

The Blueprint of Trusting Faith

Acts 7:1-8

Everybody has faith. Whether we realize it or not, we have faith in someone or something. In a broad sense, we exercise faith even with very little evidence, such as trusting that a chair can support our weight or trusting that a pilot can take us safely to our destination. In a marital sense, we exercise faith when we sign our marriage vows and contracts. In Christianity, we exercise faith by trusting in God. However, this faith isn't merely a matter of belief; it must be supported by evidence. What does that look like?

10 “Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.”

1 John 5:10

“THE EFFECTS OF BELIEVING AND NOT BELIEVING”

Some people don’t pay much (or any) attention to the truth about Christ. To them, He doesn’t matter. They are convinced that they are doing well on their own and thus have no need for a "crutch." Others vehemently reject the idea of God's existence. They claim to believe only in "science," claiming that faith is nonsensical because it cannot be verified by the scientific method.

But at some point, they will be surprised to learn that this will be the biggest decision they will ever make, and their response to Jesus' call will play an integral part in their eternity.

Our previous blog post taught us that the Father’s witness gives us great confidence to trust Jesus.

In today’s verse, John further strengthens his argument in favor of Christ, whom he calls “the Son of God.” Jesus is God’s dearly beloved Son who came to earth in the flesh and gave up His life on the Cross. Those who believe this testimony align themselves with God, who affirmed Jesus multiple times in the Gospels.

On the other hand, those who reject the full truth about Christ essentially make God a liar because they refuse to believe His testimony about the Son.

By implication, one cannot profess belief in God but deny Jesus. To deny Christ is to deny the Father (John 5:23). Anyone who rejects Christ does not do so ignorantly. Rather, it is intentional unbelief that accuses God of dishonesty.

This problem is not unique to the people of John’s time. Our generation also comes with many who claim belief in God but strongly refuse to believe in Jesus. Whether it’s His deity or humanity they deny, their willful rejection makes them fully accountable for their actions. In the end, they have every reason to fear God as they face Him in judgment.

As for us, we are convinced that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the Cross to give us eternal life. He is the only way to heaven, and God ratified this truth by raising Him from the dead. Yes, Jesus predicted His own death and resurrection, and actually died and rose again. If you're truly a person of reason, don't you think listening to Jesus' words is at least worth your while?

9 “If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.”

1 John 5:9

“THE GREATEST WITNESS”

Those who deny Jesus' deity are right. Jesus never said, "I am God." But the fact is, He provided even greater evidence of His divine nature. He did things only God could do, i.e., He forgave sins, received worship, and defeated death, among many. But He is not the only One who proved His identity; God the Father affirmed our Lord, in ways more than one.

In our previous blog, we learned that biblical and historical data show that Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be. Of the threefold witness we discussed, the witness of the Holy Spirit proves that God affirms Jesus Christ as God in the flesh.

But the witness of God is not limited to the Holy Spirit; God the Father also testifies about Christ, His Son. The Apostle makes a case that if his readers receive the witness of men, they should all the more receive God’s testimony because it is greater. Because of God’s constantly trustworthy nature, He is a greater witness than any human testifier.

This is precisely what Jesus said in one of His contests with the Jews:

37 “And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen,”

John 5:37

God the Father audibly affirmed Christ at least three times: at Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3), at His Transfiguration (Matthew 17), and after the Triumphal Entry (John 12).

To the Jews, the voice from heaven would have meant God’s approval. That said, these three instances didn’t really change their minds about Christ.

Jesus is, without a doubt, the Son of God. Not only did men and women bear witness to this truth, but more importantly, God the Father Himself—in an audible way—affirmed that Jesus was the Messiah, the Savior of the world. If we are convinced of eyewitness testimonies, we should all the more believe in the testimony of the Creator.

The Role of Gratitude in the Christian Life

1 Samuel 2:1-5

Life, especially in this day and age, can be quite challenging. Most of us can barely afford our daily needs. Some depend completely on people's mercy. Some have no idea where to get their next meal from or where to lay their heads tonight. Still, some have been praying for something for so long, thinking that God doesn't seem to be listening, and they find themselves on the brink of hopelessness.

But for those who put their trust in Jesus, there is always a reason to be thankful, even when they are in need. In tonight's sermon, we will highlight the importance of gratitude in the Christian life and explore how we can live in peace amid hardship. Moreover, we will discover how to remain calm and positive despite being in a season of waiting.

7 “For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.”

1 John 5:7-8

“A THREEFOLD WITNESS”

Christianity's critics always seem to find ways to question the reality of Jesus. Though they recognize the historical facts about our Lord, they argue that He was no more than a prophet, a miracle worker, or a revolutionary who drew a large following in first-century Israel. They reject the idea of Jesus being divine. What proof do we have that Jesus is who He said He was?

John picks up on the idea found in the previous verse. Previously, the Apostle proclaimed who Jesus is and what He has done. Now he boosts his readers’ confidence in Christ, saying, "Three testify: the Spirit, the water, and the blood." Collectively, these three agree as one. The Greek term martyreō means "to bear witness, i.e., to affirm that one has seen or heard or experienced something." Using this word, John underscores the Lord Jesus' identity, evidenced by the witness of the Spirit, the water, and the blood.

This threefold witness should give us greater trust in the truth about Christ.

First, the Spirit bears witness that Jesus is God in the flesh, the only way to heaven. The Holy Spirit validates Jesus' divine nature and work, namely, the Lord's signs, miracles, and wonders. The Holy Spirit inspired men to write the historical accounts of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Also, the Holy Spirit illuminates our hearts so that we understand and place our trust in Christ.

Second, the witness of the water, which likely refers to the Lord’s water baptism in the Jordan, where God affirmed Christ as His Son. Jesus refers to Himself as "the living water," symbolizing the eternal and abundant life He gives believers.

Third, the witness of the blood is an indisputable reference to Jesus’ crucifixion and bolsters the teaching on Jesus' humanity. At the Cross, Jesus proved His claim of being God’s Son by giving up His life and rising from the dead—as He said He would. The blood and water that flowed from Jesus' body prove His humanity, debunking the notion that He was a phantom or a spiritual ghost.

Unbelievers would often ask why they should believe in Jesus. They are looking for concrete, fool-proof evidence that He is God. These three—the Spirit, the water, and the blood—give us the unmistakable truth of Jesus’ Person and work.

These are not fictional ideas; they are historical facts recorded by eyewitnesses like John and Peter, who eventually died saying they had seen the risen Christ. If anything, their deaths should inspire us all the more to put our faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only way for man to be saved.
