Architect par excellence Lor Calma, 97

Architect, interior designer, and furniture designer Lorenzo Licad Calma aka Lor Calma, passed away yesterday at the age of 97.

Born on March 4, 1928 in Arayat, Pampanga, Calma was known to have designed iconic, deconstructivist buildings such as the School of Art and Design of the College of Saint Benilde in Manila and the Mind Museum in Taguig.

He also designed the interiors of many structures such as the Development Bank of the Philippines building in Makati, Silahis Hotel in Manila, and the Benguet Center in Mandaluyong.

Calma was also an artist, focusing on painting and sculpture. He had mounted exhibitions of his works in 2009 and 2012 at the Ayala Museum and LRI Design Plaza respectively. Both are located in Makati.

A founding member and president of the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers, Calma was awarded the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan of the City of Manila in 1988 and the Most Outstanding Kapampangan in Arts and Architecture in 2010.

Photo-ops during the ARCHILEAD event held last October 5, 2025 at the PIA Center. ARCHILEAD is a yearly national event organized by the members of the Junior Philippine Institute of Architects, that provides a venue for the members to share their experiences, insights, lessons learned & good practices within the group. The event was attended by the delegates from the Technological Institute of the Philippines-QC, Bulacan State University, National University-Baliwag, Pampanga State University & Don Bosco Technical College A heritage tour was also organized after the meeting.

An election was held in Singapore wherein JP Octaviano was elected President for FY 2007-2008. The result of said election was declared null and void by the majority of the incumbent Board due to its illegal venue. On Aug 17, 2007, VP Manuel Icasas of the holdover Board took oath as President of PIA National Board for FY 2007-2008 with a newly reorganized Board which took place in the Office of the Commissioner of PRC, Manila.

The PIA Pampanga Section is the 19th Chartered Section of the Philippine Institute of Architects, with the effect of the Chartering Resolution No. 19 dated February 2, 2019, signed by then the 52nd PIA National President, Arch. Arnel Colcol, FPIA, PIA-VP for Administration, Arch. Danilo B. Alano, PIA, PIA-National Board Secretary, Arch. Jennifer M. Sanchez, PIA & the PIA-Chairman for Section Establishment, Arch. Ricardo O. Afuang, FPIA, EPIA. PIA Pampanga Section is the 2nd Section Chartered under the Central Luzon District.

For more than eight decades, the Philippine Institute of Architects continuously growing helping & shaping the Filipino experience in architecture.

To date, the Institute is growing in strength and commitment to the profession's upliftment since it's foundation and continuing the tradition of the great organization of architects.
