ChildFund team celebrated 11 Years of 1-Tok Kaunselin Helpim Lain Service in PNG on 20th of August.

For 11 years, 1-Tok Kaunselin Helpim Lain has been there for people when they need someone to listen, care and help. Behind every call is a caring counsellor who offers compassion, hope and a safe space and making a difference, one voice at a time.

To every counsellor, we say thank you,
For all the caring things you do.
Day or night, whenever help is needed,
You listen with hearts that are open and unguarded.

24 hours, 7 days a week,
Through every call, through every cry,
You listen with care, you never pass by.
When someone feels lost or all alone,
You remind them they’re not on their own.

Strengthening Online Safety Across the Pacific

Children and young people deserve to explore the digital world safely. As online risks continue to evolve, collaboration is essential to ensure that everyone knows where to turn for support when online harm occurs.

ChildFund Papua New Guinea and the 1-Tok Kaunselin Helpim Lain were proud to participate in Pacific Cyber Week, joining government agencies, civil society organisations, technology partners and regional experts to share experiences and learn from one another on strengthening responses to online harm across the Pacific.

Pamela Krisimpa, Gender and Protection Manager at ChildFund PNG delivered the opening remarks for the Online Safety Response Pathways Workshop, highlighting the importance of coordinated referral pathways, survivor-centred support and digital safety education and awareness.

During the workshop, the 1-Tok Kaunselin Helpim Lain team shared thier experience in responding to online harm in Papua New Guinea, including providing confidential counselling, information and referrals, supporting survivors to report harmful online content, and promoting digital safety through the Swipe Safe initiative.

The discussions reinforced that protecting children online requires strong partnerships across government, law enforcement, private sector, education institutions and civil society. By working together and learning from experiences across the Pacific, we can strengthen response pathways and create a safer digital environment for every child.

The event was organised by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner. We thank Ella Serry and the organisers and all participants for their commitment to advancing online safety and fostering regional collaboration.

Empowering communities to improve children's health starts with investing in local people.

ChildFund Papua New Guinea, through the Accelerating Immunization and Health System Strengthening (AIHSS) Project, is partnering with the Central Provincial Health Authority to train Village Health Assistants (VHAs) from communities across the AIHSS-supported health facility catchment areas in Abau District.

The training equips VHAs with practical knowledge and skills in child health, immunization, nutrition, health promotion, and community mobilization, empowering them to strengthen health services at the community level.

These Village Health Assistants will work closely with local health facilities to strengthen community-health facility linkages, support routine immunization, promote healthy behaviours, and improve access to essential health services across Abau District.

By investing in community health volunteers today, we are building stronger local health systems and creating healthier futures for children and their families.

ChildFund PNG sincerely thanks the Government of Australia for its generous support through the AIHSS Project, and acknowledges the valuable partnership of the Central Provincial Health Authority, local health workers, community leaders, and volunteers whose dedication is helping improve health outcomes for children and families in Abau District.

Strong health systems help ensure that every child can survive, thrive, learn, and reach their full potential.

ChildFund PNG, in collaboration with the National Department of Health (NDoH) and AIHSS team , facilitated a Public Financial Management (PFM) Capacity Strengthening Workshop for staff from the Central Provincial Health Authority, district health services, and community health facilities.

The workshop strengthened the capacity of health workers and managers in planning, budgeting, financial management, expenditure tracking, reporting, and accountability. Effective public financial management helps ensure that health resources are used efficiently, reach frontline services, and improve health outcomes for children, families, and communities.

In collaboration with UNICEF and the Provincial Health Authority, GIS reporting tools were also rolled out to strengthen health data collection, analysis, visualization, and evidence-based decision-making. These tools will support more accurate mapping of health service coverage, identification of service delivery gaps, and improved planning to ensure vulnerable children and communities are not left behind.

These initiatives demonstrate the power of collaboration in strengthening Papua New Guinea's health system.

ChildFund PNG is proud to work alongside the National Department of Health, Central Provincial Health Authority, UNICEF, and AIHSS, with the support of the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), to build the capacity of frontline health workers and institutions.

This week was quite a busy yet exciting one as ChildFund PNG country office welcomed the CEO of ChildFund Australia, Brayden Howie for a meaningful visit focused on strengthening partnerships, engaging with communities, and supporting ongoing development initiatives.

As part of his visit, Mr. Howie travelled to Dabilima community in the Abau District of the Central province to observe a ChildFund PNG-supported ICHOS (Integrated Community Health Outreach Services) under the Accelerated Immunisation and Health System Strengthening Program Phase 2.

One of the aims of the AIHSS project is to sustainably improve health outcomes through increased access to quality and affordable health services, alongside strengthening health systems. The program supports stronger immunisation systems to increase vaccination coverage and equitable healthcare access for children and communities across Central Province through partnership, system strengthening, and inclusive service delivery.

Mr. Howie also visited the Upulima Health Sub-Centre, a ChildFund-supported facility, where he engaged in dialogue with health workers in charge to learn about the impact of the program in the local communities and in the work of the front-line health workers.

We acknowledge and thank the generous support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) for supporting this important work.

The visit provided an opportunity to witness firsthand the incredible work being carried out on the ground and reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration to improve the health and wellbeing of children and families in Papua New Guinea.

In Papua New Guinea, health authorities are asking parents and caregivers to bring children for another round of polio vaccination to help stop the spread of the virus and keep every child safe.
👶 Even if your child has already received the vaccine before, they still need this round of vaccination for stronger protection.

✅ Vaccines save lives
Parents and caregivers, please make sure your children are vaccinated when health teams visit your community, school, or clinic. Together, we can protect PNG’s children from paralysis and lifelong illness.
📍Vaccination teams are reaching communities across the country, especially in high-risk areas including NCD and Central Province.

💧 World Water Day 2026 – Water & Gender 💧

This year’s theme highlights safe water and sanitation as a human right and a key driver of gender equality.

Under the Disaster Ready Project, communities in Kaparoko and Irupara villages, Rigo District, came together to celebrate World Water Day last month through learning, creativity, and awareness.

In Kaparoko Village, students from Kaparoko Primary School actively participated by:
🎨 Showcasing artwork on water systems and the importance of water
📝 Writing and performing poems
🧼 Demonstrating proper handwashing techniques

Community awareness sessions were also conducted with support from leaders, DRMCs, and Community Health Volunteers, covering:
✔️ Hygiene promotion & handwashing
✔️ Disaster risk reduction (DRR)
✔️ Climate change & climate-smart agriculture
✔️ Child protection & GBV awareness

In Irupara Village, children from the elementary and early childhood classes took part in hygiene demonstrations and shared key handwashing messages. Community leaders and the Ward Councillor supported the awareness sessions led by DRMCs.

The celebration concluded with the official opening of the Irupara Solar Borewell Water System, improving access to safe and clean water for the community.

Together, through the Disaster Ready Project, we are strengthening resilience, promoting equality, and ensuring communities have access to life-saving water and knowledge. 💙

📢 Strengthening Immunisation Services in PNG

The National Department of Health (NDoH) EPI team recently met with ChildFund and partners under the AIHSS2 program to review progress and strengthen immunisation services in Central and Northern Provinces.

💉 Over the past two years, we’ve seen:
✔️ Improved vaccine coverage for children
✔️ Expanded outreach to reach more communities
✔️ Stronger partnerships with Provincial Health Authorities
✔️ Better data reporting and tracking

We’re also working to:
🔹 Reduce children lost to follow-up
🔹 Improve cold chain systems
🔹 Strengthen financial management
🔹 Ensure inclusive services for all, including people with disabilities

Despite challenges, we are making real progress to ensure every child has access to life-saving vaccines.
