Nestled in the remote Obura-Wonenara District of Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands, Marawaka is a region synonymous with premium, high-altitude Arabica coffee.

Cultivated using traditional, organic practices, this specialty coffee relies on labor-intensive methods that ensure exceptional quality. To maintain its presence in competitive global markets—including South Korea, the USA, Dubai, and Australia—a critical infrastructure project is underway: the rehabilitation of the Marawaka Airstrip, made possible through the National Government's PIP funding under the RAA.

Where is Simbai?

Simbai is a remote region nestled in the Bismarck Range within the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea. It is situated in the high-altitude Simbai-Kaironk Valley—approximately 1,600 to 2,000 meters above sea level—on the northern montane fringe. Historically, Simbai borders Jiwaka (Jimi) and Western Highlands (Baiyer), and it maintained active trade routes with Enga (Kompiam) prior to Independence.

Simbai is world-renowned as the home of the Kalam people. They are famous for their intricate and massive headdresses made from thousands of emerald-green beetle heads (mimor), which are proudly displayed during the annual Kalam Cultural Festival.

At approximately 5,804 ft (1,769 meters) above sea level sits a vital airstrip. Its total runway length is approximately 650 meters, with a usable width of 30 meters. This airstrip holds particular significance because of the rich organic coffee produced in the area.

Through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed with the Coffee Industry Corporation, the RAA has undertaken to support the National Government’s goal of reviving agriculture, especially in remote regions. Once rehabilitated, the Simbai Airstrip will be a primary contributor to this mission.

The airstrip serves as a critical lifeline for a community of roughly 50,000 people, providing the only consistent means for delivering store goods, medical supplies, and basic services.

A small team from the RAA has arrived to rehabilitate the airstrip. This team will require the collaborative efforts of the community to complete the project. Watch this space for updates on the progress of this project, funded through the National Government's PIP.

Headline: ✈️ Touchdown in Guari! The restoration begins today.

We are excited to announce that our team has officially deployed to Guari Airstrip in the Goilala District of Central Province! 🚁⛰️

This deployment is the next step in our partnership with the Central Provincial Government, following the MoA signed in May 2024. After the successful completion of Dorobisoro Airstrip late last year, we are moving full steam ahead to reconnect Guari to the rest of PNG.

The Journey So Far:

May 2024: MoA signed to prioritize 8 airstrips.
July 2024: K240,000 funding for surveys and scoping.
Sept 2025: Funding allocated for Guari and Dorobisoro restoration works.
Nov 2025: Dorobisoro completed! Preparation underway for test landing
TODAY: Team lands in Guari for a 3-week deployment. 🛠️💪

A huge thank you to the Central Provincial Government under the Leadership of Hon. Rufina Peter for their continued commitment to rural infrastructure.

Stay tuned for updates as we work to clear the way for safer skies and stronger communities!

🛩️ Goodnews for Karamui: Negabo Airstrip is undergoing Rehabilitation!

Exciting times are ahead for the people of Negabo! We are thrilled to announce that the Rural Airstrip Agency (RAA) team has officially deployed to Negabo Airstrip for a 6-week rehabilitation project.

Working hand-in-hand with the local community, our team is dedicated to restoring the airstrip to ensure safe and reliable aviation operations return to the region.

Negabo isn't just a landing strip; it is a strategic lifeline for the Karamui Salt Nomane District in Chimbu Province. Here’s why this project is a game-changer:

Economic Engine: Negabo has a proven capacity for coffee freight. This rehabilitation, funded by the National Government, is designed to boost coffee exports and encourage agricultural trade, putting more money directly into the pockets of local farmers.

A Vital Connection: For years, MAF, Adventist Aviation and other operators have been the wings of hope for this community. Without this airstrip, thousands of people face extreme struggles accessing life-saving medical care and essential government services.

Community Spirit: This project is a true collaboration. The local community is working right alongside the RAA team to ensure their gateway to the world remains open and safe.

The timing could not have been better, with the launch of the $250mil AgriConnect program in Goroka yesterday which seeks to link farmers, entrepreneurs and agribusinesses across the country.

By recognizing the economic importance of Negabo, we are not just fixing a runway—we are securing a future where health, trade, and prosperity are within reach for everyone in the area.

Stay tuned for more updates as the work progresses over the next six weeks! 🛠️✈️

Happy 50th Independence Anniversary Papua New Guinea, a monumental milestone. As we gather and celebrate in our villages, communities, Districts, and Provinces, we are united by a common thread—the vibrant red, black, and gold of our flag. The theme for this special year, "Celebrate our Past, Inspire Our Future," calls on each of us to reflect on our journey and look ahead to the future we are building together as a PEOPLE.

Fifty years ago, our founding fathers, with courage and determination, raised our flag for the first time. They created a nation from more than 800 Languages with diversed Cultures and Traditions, proving that our incredible diversity is not a weakness, but our greatest strength.

We honor the resilience of our ancestors, who passed down a rich heritage of culture, land, and community spirit. Their sacrifices and visions laid the foundation for the freedom we enjoy today. Let us remember their challenges and their dreams, for it is from this deep history that we draw our identity.

As we celebrate our Golden Jubilee, this is not just a time for looking back. It is a powerful call to action for the next generation. Our past has prepared us, and now it is up to us to build a future worthy of our legacy.
Let this anniversary inspire us to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose.

At the RAA, WE are committed to building a country that is strong, united, and prosperous for all, one airstrip at a time. We are committed to working together with the communities and our partners to protect our environment, create opportunities for our children, and ensure that every Papua New Guinean has a chance to thrive.

The next fifty years will be defined by the actions we take today. Let us celebrate our achievements, learn from our challenges, and step boldly into our future, together as one people, one nation.

God bless Papua New Guinea.🇵🇬🇵🇬🇵🇬❤️❤️❤️

In 2016, the Daga and Weraura LLGs of ALOTAU District produced 160 TONNES of Coffee. If the local smallholder farmers are properly supported by all stakeholders, these two LLGs have the potential to produce 500 Tonnes of Coffee annually.

I first discovered this in January (2025) on a visit to Agaun Airstrip through the support of the Alotau DDA. We visited Agaun and Rabaraba again last week, this time with the Coffee Industry Corporation and the Coffee Ministry.

The Agaun Airstrip closed in 2021 during the Covid pandemic. Since then, farmers who were determined had to walk 3 days to reach Rabaraba. From there, the parchments were taken by boats to Alotau and finally shipped to Lae. A long arduous and often dangerous journey to jungle terrains and rough seas.

Coffee from Alotau has been exported to countries like Japan and most recently to Estonia, halfway across the world. And there is great demand for this organic coffee.

Citizens don't need handouts. Our people are resilient and hardworking. They only need smart intervention and support so the basic infrastructure, facilities and technical support is made available so that they can have access to opportunities and improve their livelihoods through their own sweat.

Plans are underway to prioritize remote airstrips that have the potential to produce large volumes of coffee, cocoa and vanilla but are disadvantaged due to lack of access to market and technical support. In 2 years, we are hoping to rehabilitate and restore at least 50 airstrips that have the potential to produce in excess of 100 tonnes of commercial commodities for export. This will translate to direct cash in the hands of local farmers in remote communities and also earn much-needed export revenue.

Thank you to the Coffee Minister for taking a personal interest in seeing these stranded bags leave Alotau for international export destinations. Thank you also to CIC and the Alotau DDA for recognizing and prioritizing support for local coffee farmers. Through such collaboration and partnership, we add value and improve the lives of our people - one remote community at a time.
