MINING Minister Solen Loifa plans to discuss with the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) permanently stationing officers in alluvial mining areas to monitor activities and address issues.

Loifa made the commitment in Parliament on Thursday in response to a question from East Sepik Governor Allan Bird regarding the growing alluvial mining activities and issues in parts of East Sepik.

Bird asked whether the MRA could have officers permanently based in areas where alluvial mining is taking place to address concerns relating to security, operational issues and the expectations of local communities.

THE founder of Tree Kangaroo Conservation Programme (TKCP) in Yus local level government (LLG) of Kabwum in Morobe, Dr Lisa Dabek, was impressed with new developments at the recent 30th anniversary celebration of the programme in Lae.

The TKCP is the first conservation area in PNG gazetted in 2009.

LANDOWNERS of Kainantu in Eastern Highlands and Markham areas in Morobe have been promised, by Prime Minister James Marape, that they will receive their rightful benefits from the K92 mine.

Marape gave the assurance after responding to Kainantu MP William Hagahuno’s questions in Parliament on Thursday.

He was questioned on whether K92 Mining was operating legally, raised the lack of compensation to landowners over 23 years, and asked why the mine had not been upgraded from a Mining Lease (ML) to a Special Mining Lease (SML).
