Through constant tribal fighting and neglect, many of our young people have become dependent on the trees planted by their fathers and great-grandfathers, without making any effort to replace them. We continue to harvest what previous generations planted, but we are not planting for the generations to come.

A responsible generation does not only consume; it also replenishes. Let us plant trees today so our children and grandchildren can enjoy the same benefits we inherited.

HELA PROVINCE HAS NO TIME TO WASTE!
When it comes to stop logging ban and National Reforestation and Afforestation Program (NRAP 2025–2030)

Hela has just become the first province in PNG to sign an MOU with the National Forestry Authority (NFA) to implement the NEC’s Deforestation and Afforestation Program. They are not just talking about climate action as they are leading it.

Hela has allocated a provincial office to the NFA along with the first 15 hectares of land toward the NFA’s *800,000 hectare nationwide reforestation target.* This builds on the momentum of the *Komo–Hulia Agroforestry Program (2025),* where the Ajakare community planted 5,000 trees and voluntarily allocated 300 hectares of customary land to support national reforestation.

Governor Hon. Philip Undialu is turning this into a true community effort. Every school child in Hela will plant a tree, and every public servant will plant 1,000 trees each. This echoes the earlier call by Acting MD John Mosoro for communities to embrace *“Painim giraun, planim diwai”* (find land, plant trees) as a practical pathway to prosperity.

PM Marape’s message at COP30 that “forests are the lungs of the world” is being realized in his own province. Governor Undialu emphasized that investing in oxygen is the ultimate pathway to sustainable development. His eagle eyed leadership aligns with the *ban on round log exports (effective December 2025)* and the push for downstream processing, ensuring that PNG’s forests are valued as assets, not exploited as raw logs.

Big thanks to NFA MD Mr. Mosoro, PM Marape, and the Hela Provincial Government for moving from policy to action in just three months. Their collaboration mirrors the broader *Green Economy vision* as anchored in nature based markets, ecosystem credits, and the establishment of a Green Bank as that PNGFA and CEPA outlined in Mt. Hagen earlier this year.

This is a true generational investment. The enthusiasm of the humble Huli has shown that communities can reject negativity and embrace change. Hela has set the pace.

A New Beginning: Mariant Primary School’s Journey Back from the Flames

PROGRESSIVE REPORT OF MARIANT PRIMARY SCHOOL as of today 15th June 2026. Anthony Paul - Chairman of the Catholic Church Mariant.

First and for most, thanks in heaps to Our Lord for everything!
Last Friday 12th June made 4 weeks (20 days without schooling) after Mariant Primary school was gazed down on the 15th May 2026 which is termed BLACK 15 to go down in history.
Within 4 weeks the communities/Christians mobilized to rebuilding the school immediately.
The reason being that the very surrounding communities/tribes and school were completely INNOCENT in that surprise attacks by an alien tribe of SHP with few few vested interested people out of jealousy.
Through the National Court of Wabag, OMS and communities CEASED TO STOP THE ALIEN FIGHT IN KANDEP ENGA.
Communities resorted to NO RETALIATION IN FIGHT BUT TO BUILDING THE SCHOOL BACK.
I am in the village this week to ensure these happens.
Today is the Second day into normal classes and schooling here at Mariant Primary School.
Communities have built 2x buildings with 4x classrooms, digicel classrooms with 2: 4 classrooms completed and are in use today.
The last building with 2x Classrooms is underway.

The blackboards are produced here and used as seen.
One Staff house is done and in use now.
The teachers are accommodated at the Church Guesthouses.

Am just pleased to see all the teachers have vowed to building the school together with the communities. The visitation by PEB and Catholic Diocese Education Board last Wednesday 11th June gave the greenlight for school resumption and its a reality now.

There is enormous support by the educated elites of Kandep in prompt rebuilding Mariant Primary School to completion this year.
Kandep's very senior public servant Daniel Kumbon who was very impressed with the progress of rebuilding works donated K1000 to the workers here who were working without meals those weeks. Now for this week they are boasted with Rice bags and the rate of working here is just superb.

I thank each and everyone who supported much in rebuilding the school in prayers, materials and cash.. We thank our Governor for his considerate heart to us during our gloomy moments especially our teachers. There is a Father on Earth and in Heaven for us... End
