Happy World Environment Day! 🌍✨

In Papua New Guinea, our land and water are not just resources—they are the very lifeblood of our communities, our culture, and our food systems. From the smallholder gardens feeding families to the ecosystems that sustain us, everything is interconnected. 🇵🇬🌱

Protecting our environment means securing our food supply, improving climate adaptability, and making sure that future generations have what they need to live well.

As we look at the theme "Protecting land and water means protecting life itself," let’s commit to everyday practices that nurture the soil, conserve our waters, and honor the environment that gives us so much. 🌾💧

What is one action you are taking today to care for our environment? Let us know below! 👇

🇵🇬 A shared commitment to Papua New Guinea's environmental future.

Mr Nicolas Booth (UNDP), Mr Peteris Ustubs (European Commission) and Dr Kachen Wongsathapornchai (FAO PNG) formalized a new partnership through the Forest, Climate Change and Biodiversity SRBC Accelerator earlier this week.

As highlighted during the signing, the initiative will help strengthen national systems and coordination while supporting Papua New Guinea's efforts to access climate finance, protect biodiversity and advance sustainable forest management for future generations.

The partnership supports national priorities by strengthening the systems, coordination and financing needed to advance climate action, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management in Papua New Guinea.

🇵🇬 Rebuilding, step by step, together!

Following the devastating landslide in Mulitaka, Enga Province, restoring food systems and livelihoods has become central to recovery and long-term stability.

This week (27–29 May 2026), FAO, working alongside the Highlands Regional Department of Agriculture & Livestock and the Enga Provincial Division of Agriculture & Livestock, hosted a two-day Training-of-Trainers (ToT) workshop on Integrated Food Security, Crop Production, and Livestock Systems for Post-Disaster Recovery and Climate Resilience.

Up to 24 provincial officers, youth, and farmers took part to become master trainers, building hands-on expertise in:

▶️ Climate-Smart Agriculture: Sweet potato seed multiplication, food security needs assessments, and land use management planning
▶️ Livestock & Biosecurity: Poultry and pig husbandry, animal nutrition, and African Swine Fever (ASF) awareness
▶️ Inclusive Recovery: Gender Action Learning Systems (GALS) to support women and youth in leading recovery efforts

This effort expands the capacity of provincial and district officers, women, youth, and lead farmers so climate-smart farming knowledge reaches every affected community.

🌎 🇵🇬 From Forest Protection to Community Benefits: PNG Launches USD 63.4M GCF Programme

Papua New Guinea’s forests are globally significant — but for the communities who have protected them for generations, this programme is also about livelihoods, opportunity, and the future.

At APEC Haus today, the Government of Papua New Guinea, together with FAO and partners, officially launched the USD 63.4 million Green Climate Fund Results-Based Payments Programme.

The programme follows nearly a decade of technical work, consultations, safeguards development, and international review processes led by PNG through its REDD+ agenda.

“Today, we move from recognition to real implementation. From climate ambition to tangible impact for communities and future generations of Papua New Guinea,” said Dr. Kachen Wongsathapornchai, FAO Head of Office in Papua New Guinea.

Acting CCDA Managing Director Ms. Debra Sungi said communities now want to see “real implementation and real benefits delivered on the ground through sustainable livelihoods, conservation activities, community development and climate initiatives.”

Launching the programme on behalf of the Government, National Climate Change Board Chairman Mr. Ronald Meketa said climate finance must now translate into visible results for people across the country.

“Our communities will see and feel the benefits of this funding. Too often, large amounts of climate finance are discussed globally, but very little reaches the people on the ground. Papua New Guinea cannot afford that anymore. The hard reset starts today.”

The programme will direct 60% of proceeds toward community-focused investments, including sustainable agriculture, forest conservation, and low-emission rural development activities.

🔴 PNG LAUNCHES USD 63.4M CLIMATE FINANCE PROGRAMME AT APEC HAUS

Papua New Guinea has launched a USD 63.4 million Green Climate Fund Results-Based Payments (GCF-RBP) programme to support forest protection, emissions reduction, and community livelihoods — the culmination of years of preparation and a key milestone in the country’s climate finance agenda.

The programme recognises 17 million tonnes of verified emissions reductions (2014–2016) and channels climate finance into real development outcomes.

Launching the programme this morning at APEC Haus, on behalf of the State, National Climate Change Board Chairman Mr. Ronald Meketa said communities across Papua New Guinea must directly benefit from climate finance investments delivered on the ground.

“Our communities will see and feel the benefits of this funding. Too often, large amounts of climate finance are discussed globally, but very little reaches the people on the ground. Papua New Guinea cannot afford that anymore. The hard reset starts today. This programme must become a model of delivery, accountability, and visible results.” — Mr. Ronald Meketa, Chairman, National Climate Change Board

✨ Highlights:

▶️USD 63.4M climate finance secured
▶️60% directly allocated to community livelihoods
▶️ Sustainable agriculture support for customary landowners
▶️ Forest monitoring and reporting systems upgraded
🇵🇬 REDD+ and national NDC priorities directly supported

Implemented by FAO in partnership with CCDA, the programme translates climate results into direct action on the ground.

🇵🇬👩‍🌾 Women are taking on stronger roles in agricultural leadership and production across rural communities.

They are managing farming activities, coordinating household and group production, and making decisions that influence what is grown, how it is grown, and how produce reaches local markets. Their involvement is increasingly visible in farmer groups and community-level planning around food and income.

From production to decision-making spaces, women continue to play a central role in how rural agriculture is organised and sustained.

Building skills in decision making systems: DSS training in Goroka, Friday 22 May 2026

Our FAO team conducted a two-day Decision Support System (DSS) training and NEED’s assessment which concluded last Friday 22 May 2026, at the Research Conservation Foundation Centre in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

This training and assessment forms part of the FAO component of the CEPA–FAO GEF-7 project titled “Enabling Sustainable Production Landscape on Biodiversity, Human Livelihoods and Wellbeing”.
The training included lectures and hands-on practical sessions focusing on tools that are critical for strengthening natural resource monitoring and supporting sustainable land management and climate action.

The participants from the training included sectoral officers from the Eastern Highlands Provincial Administration, representing the Natural Resources Division; the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries; the Policy, Planning and Lands Division; the Provincial Disaster Office; and the PNG Forest Authority. An officer from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) PNG is also in attendance.

The same training was also delivered today to selected community representatives, as well as community-based organisations (CBOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) supporting biodiversity conservation.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Dr Sangion Tiu, the Director of the Research Conservation Foundation, for providing the facility and hosting this training.

🌱🌍 Agricultural biodiversity supports the food we eat and the environment we rely on every day.

It helps provide healthier diets, allows crops and animals to adjust to changing weather, and improves soil and water conditions for farming communities.

Biodiversity also gives farmers more ways to produce food and earn income, creating more opportunities for families and future generations.

Looking after biodiversity means looking after food, farming, and the future.
