Research Collaboration | GIS & Remote Sensing

MDF PNG is seeking experienced GIS & Remote-Sensing researchers to collaborate on a scientific assessment of vegetation and LULC change (2000–2026) in the Kamiali Wildlife Management Area (KWMA), Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.

The study will use Google Earth Engine, Landsat, Sentinel-1/2, and machine-learning classification.
Key expertise:
• LULC & vegetation mapping
• Random Forest classification
• Change & transition analysis
• Accuracy assessment/confusion matrices
• GIS, spatial statistics & scientific mapping
• Scientific manuscript development
Research collaboration and co-authorship will be considered based on contribution.

The effects of climate change are becoming more severe along the Waria River, where continuous heavy rain and repeated flooding are destroying food gardens that local communities depend on for survival. Prolonged rainfall causes the soil to become waterlogged, making it difficult for crops such as taro, banana, yam, and sweet potato to grow properly. Floodwaters wash away fertile topsoil, drown young plants, and leave gardens damaged for long periods. As flooding happens more often, families are losing their main source of food and income, creating hunger, hardship, and uncertainty. This situation places increasing stress on communities because climate change is not only affecting the environment, but also threatening food security and the daily lives of people who rely on the land.
