🇦🇺 WWII uncovered: 55/53rd Australian Infantry Battalion: Honouring the Diggers from New South Wales

"Three wounded Australians, all from New South Wales and serving with the 55/53rd Battalion, make their way out of the front line to a first aid station."

"Identified left to right: Private Keith Edward Beckmann, Private William Henry Walker and Private Bruce Robert Chadwick. The men were wounded during the Battalion's attack on Japanese entrenched astride the Sanananda Track on 7 December 1942, which resulted in 229 members of the Battalion being listed as casualties, wounded or missing." - Australian War Memorial

All three men survived the war. Lest We Forget.

November 1942. The first crossing of Eora Creek on a section of the Kokoda Track from Myola. A narrow footbridge made of logs (left) spans the creek, as water tumbles over rocks in a waterfall. Crossings along the Track varied from small structures like this to substantial ones built by engineers. (AWM P02424.100)

🇦🇺WWII uncovered: A Salute to the Salvation Army Red Shield Defence Service of Australia

Balikpapan, Borneo, 7 July 1945. Captain A.R. Hall, Salvation Army Representative, serving Tea to wounded members of 2/33 Infantry Battalion at the Salvation Army Roadside Stall on Milford Highway. Identified Personnel Are: Private S Oldfield, B Company (1); Private E J Hobbs, Headquarters Company (2).

The Salvation Army Red Shield Defence Services (RSDS) has been serving Australia’s Defence Forces for more than 100 years. During WWII, Red Shield Officers, better known as “Sallymen”, established the now-famous "Hop In" centres at war zones from Tobruk to the Kokoda track, providing on-the-spot comforts and a home away from home for soldiers. The centres ranged from large marquees in major staging areas to hastily erected flies – all displaying the familiar “Hop In You’re Welcome” signs.
