The Legend of "Wood of the Gods" the Eaglewood.
If you do not know, Eaglewood aka agarwood or gaharu as called in Southeast Asia is one of the world's most precious treasures and it grows right here in ENB Province and most other provinces across PNG.
Eaglewood is not just a tree—it is a global icon of luxury, tradition, and healing.
As a species protected under CITES Appendix II, Eaglewood is as rare as it is valuable. Here is why this "Liquid Gold" is celebrated across the globe:
Eaglewood is so special because its heavenly scent is well-known for its complex, oriental-woody aroma with notes of soft fruit and vanilla, it has been used for centuries in the world’s finest perfumes and incenses.
It is a natural wonder. The prized dark resin only forms when the tree is naturally stimulated or artificially scientifically inoculated making every piece of heartwood a unique masterpiece of nature.

The ENB Eaglewood Farmers Association Inc. is proud to announce a transformative milestone for our province. We are preparing to launch the Official Online Tree & Owner Registration Portal—a digital gateway designed to turn your backyard resource into a global asset.

As we move toward this historic launch, it is vital to understand why the tree you stand next to is often called "The Wood of the Gods."

Why Eaglewood (Agarwood)?

Eaglewood is not just a tree; it is one of the most valuable biological resources on Earth. When the Aquilaria tree is infected by a specific mold, it produces a dark, aromatic resin known as Agarwood. This resin is the source of Oud, a fragrance component more expensive than gold.

1. Unmatched Economic Value

While traditional crops like cocoa and coconut provide steady returns, Eaglewood offers a high-value "pension" for families. High-grade agarwood can fetch thousands of dollars per kilogram on the international market, fueling industries in the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.

Since its introduction to PNG via the PNG Sustainable Development Program (PNGSDP) 20 years ago, the aglewood aka agarwood tree has become a high-value commodity in East New Britain.

The ENB Eaglewood Farmers Association Inc. (Incorporated 2020) now represents over 300+ growers with an estimated 30,000 tree growing everywhere in the 4 districts. Despite this growth, the industry lacks a formal provincial policy, leading to untapped economic potential and unregulated practices.

The association therefore in partnership with the PNG Forest Authority is committed to advancing the eaglewood industry on behalf of it's members including every farmer across the province. Hence, it is now finalizing a policy submission proposal to the ENB PEC seeking formal support and Endorsement of the eaglewood industry in ENB.
