🎉🏢 OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PNG SMU TRAINING CENTER BUILDING AT KAFANA SMU VILLAGE 🏢🎉

Kafana SMU Village proudly celebrated the official opening of the PNG SMU Training Centre Building, a significant achievement that will strengthen community development, leadership training, and skills enhancement across Papua New Guinea.

The event was witnessed by representatives from SMU Project Villages, participating SMU villages, and surrounding communities who gathered to celebrate this important event. Also, present were the Provincial Administrators and their delegates from across the Highlands Region, following the Highlands Region Provincial Administrators Conference held from 21–22 May 2026.

The Training Centre was officially opened by Mr. Philip Leo, the Secretary for Provincial & Local Level Government Affairs, highlighting the Government's commitment to supporting rural development and community empowerment initiatives through SMU.

Speaking during the ceremony, PNG SMU Country Coordinator and Consultant, Mr. Uno Konisimo, expressed his sincere appreciation to the Secretary and the Government for their continued support in recognizing and driving the Saemaul Undong Movement as an effective development model in Papua New Guinea. He also commended all SMU Villages for their commitment, dedication, and determination in embracing and implementing the SMU principles of diligence, self-help, and cooperation to bring meaningful development to their communities.

Mr. Philip Leo made a generous donation of mattresses and beddings for the new training center, which will provide accommodation for villagers attending future SMU training programs. In addition, he also made donation of sewing machines which will support skills development training, equipping trainees with practical vocational skills and creating opportunities for income generation and self-reliance.

As a token of appreciation, the SMU Villages also thanked the government for the support through SMU and made commitment to supply timbers, building material, carpenters and food rations to contribute towards the building of an additional training center.

The PNG SMU Training Centre will serve as a hub of participating SMU Villages for leadership training, agriculture, livelihood development, entrepreneurship, and community capacity building. It stands as a symbol of partnership, vision, and collective effort toward building stronger and more resilient communities throughout Papua New Guinea.

Together, we continue to build a brighter future for our people through the spirit of Saemaul Undong.

PRIME MINISTER JAMES MARAPE VISITS KAFANA SMU VILLAGE.

Prime Minister James Marape has commended the progress of a locally driven agricultural initiative funded by the Eastern Highlands Provincial Government in partnership and implementation by PNG SMU following his recent visit to the Kafana SMU Village mini chicken feed factory.

During the visit, the Prime Minister witnessed firsthand the operation and production processes of locally manufactured chicken feed. The project highlights the growing impact of community-based development efforts aimed at strengthening rural economies.

The mini factory produces chicken feed primarily from locally grown sweet potatoes(Kaukau). This innovative approach not only reduces reliance on imported feed but also creates income-generating opportunities for local farmers and communities.

“I am very impressed with what I have seen here today,” the Prime Minister said. “This is the kind of initiative we must encourage across the country. It demonstrates that with the right support and determination, our people can drive economic development from the grassroots level.”

He commended this project and committed his support to ensure the Kaukau Stockfeed is produced in a bigger scale with the aim of expanding production capacity and creating wider market access for locally produced chicken feed.

The production process is closely monitored by Mr. Uno Konisimo, the SMU Country Coordinator & Consultant, as Team Leader for Stockfeed with agricultural experts, including Mr. Wayne Powae, Mr. Johnny Wemin and Mr. Erickson Suguya, to ensure the feed meets industry standards before commercialization.

Initial results have shown promising and favourable outcomes, indicating strong potential for broader application.

The Kafana SMU Village mini chicken feed factory stands as a testament to the success of the Saemaul Undong program in Papua New Guinea, showcasing how community-led initiatives can contribute meaningfully to national development goals.
