Today we celebrate Earth Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging action to protect our environment.

The 2026 Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” reminds us that each of us has a role to play in caring for the world around us. Too often, we take more from nature than we need without considering the consequences. Then, when flooding, drought, heat, and the loss of wildlife begin to affect us, it is often too late to prevent the damage, and much longer to restore what has been lost.

At RCF, we believe that education is the first step to protecting our environment. By helping people understand the importance of forests, wildlife, water, and biodiversity, we can build stronger communities and a healthier future.

Protecting our planet such as preventing logging and deforestation, can enable us to protect planet Earth for the future.

Melanesian CBO Leaders Workshop

Reflecting on traditional knowledge and wisdom to guide conservation efforts today is a challenge because of the decline in these practices and the disconnect between present generation and our traditional values and practices. Therefore, on Monday 30th March 2026, RCF proudly hosted the first Melanesian CBO Leaders Capacity Building Workshop at our compound in North Goroka. The event brought together 15 participants from community-based organizations across Eastern Highlands Province. These included community leaders and youth from Wantrifu & Miruma (Daulo), Nagamiza (Goroka), Yasina & Oyafayufa (Unggai-Bena) and Mengino 2 & Maimafu (Lufa).

The gathering was conducted in a true Melanesian setting, where participants shared betel nut and sugarcane while engaging in storytelling and open discussions. Guided by the facilitator, Dr Sangion Tiu, participants reflected on key questions about their identity, traditional use of forests, land and water resources, and ancestral knowledge of caring for land, forests, and water. Through these discussions, participants shared experiences of traditional laws and practices, learning from one another and strengthening their understanding of community-based conservation.

After answering the questions, participants took time to reflect and identify practical solutions to challenges affecting their communities. They discussed simple, achievable actions they can take to address issues such as protecting forests, land, and water resources. Each participant left with a personal responsibility to return to their community and apply what they have learned while RCF was tasked to produce booklets on traditional laws that guided use of land, forest and water resources. The next Melanesian CBO leaders Capacity Building Workshop is planned for mid this year, where we look forward to hearing about the activities conducted by the participants. We also look forward to sharing the first draft of the traditional laws.

RCF acknowledges Synchronicity Earth for the funding support.

RCF Strengthens Conservation Education through UOG Partnership

RCF, through its Conservation Education (CONED) Program, has maintained a long-standing partnership with the University of Goroka (UOG), working closely with the Indigenous Environment & Development Studies (IEDS) Division under the School of Social Sciences, teaching the Environmental Studies students over the years to strengthen environmental education and conservation awareness.

Today, RCF joined an in-service training with IEDS tutors and lecturers at the RCF compound, focusing on Standard-Base Curriculum (SBC) Lesson Plan Components and Procedures. The session was facilitated by Ms. Kally and covered the key components of an SBC lesson plan, correct lesson procedures, and ways to contextualise lesson plans for effective classroom supervision.

RCF Director Dr. Sangion Appiee Tiu and Conservation Education Coordinator Miss Henrietta Ame, who both assist with Environmental Studies courses in the IEDS program, participated alongside other tutors and lecturers as part of the ongoing RCF–UOG collaboration.

Through partnerships like this, RCF continues to support biodiversity conservation and the training of future teachers in Papua New Guinea.

From February 3rd to 8th, 2026, the RCF Natural Resource Management Program (N**P) team travelled to Kwiop in Jiwaka Province to work with the Mt. Goplom Community Conservation Area.

This 7-day trip, supported under the WCS Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Program, was focused on strengthening conservation efforts while supporting sustainable livelihoods for the local community.

During our time there, the team carried out several key activities:
▪️Conducted a Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) assessment
▪️Completed a Conservation Area assessment survey
▪️Established a hunting and wildlife monitoring baseline survey
▪️Delivered Native Chicken Husbandry training (to promote alternative protein sources)
▪️Conducted Coffee Rehabilitation and Management training to support income generation

These activities aim to balance wildlife conservation with sustainable community development.

Learning & Impact

Our team witnessed firsthand how conservation has strengthened unity within the community. Environmental protection is not just about protecting forests and wildlife it is also about building social cohesion, preserving culture, and improving access to basic services in remote areas.

This visit has further strengthened the partnership between RCF, WCS, and the Kwiop communities, ensuring long-term collaboration towards a sustainable and resilient future.

We thank the people of Kwiop for their hospitality and commitment to protecting both their environment and their heritage.

Reviving the Simbu Resource Centre

On 21st January 2026, a small team from our office in Goroka travelled to Kundiawa, Simbu Province, to assess the condition of the Simbu Resource Centre and plan its revival.

Led by RCF Director Dr. Sangion Appiee Tiu, the visit included Conservation Education Coordinator Henrietta Ame and Communications Intern Delton Jnr Dindi. The team inspected the facility, met with the caretaker Mr. Denke Sine, and identified priority needs such as cleaning, minor renovations, interior refurbishment, and improved signage.

During the renovation period, the centre will continue to operate at a limited level, focusing on conservation awareness and training support through the distribution of educational posters and information materials.

Once restoration works are finished, the centre will return to its normal operations, supporting school visits, conservation awareness programs, and community training activities across Simbu Province.

Renovation work is expected to begin soon, with plans to fully restore the centre later this year. RCF looks forward to working with schools, partners, and communities to strengthen conservation learning in Simbu.

We began this week with another sad news. Our Terrestrial Protected Area Manager at CEPA, late Benside Thomas passed away on Monday. This came as a double blow to us in the conservation circle.
On behalf of our Board , Management, staff and the people of Crater Mountain WMA, we share our deepest condolences to his colleagues at CEPA and family.
Late Benside was very supportive of our efforts to restructure and revive the work of the Management Committee in the WMA. He was always willing to give us his officers to assist where needed.
We will greatly miss his support and advice as we journey further.

We salute you BT and thank you for your patience, and time. May you rest in peace BT.

We join our environmental partners and colleagues to share our heartfelt condolences to our partner, Bismarck Ramu Group, on the loss of their Executive Director, late John Chitoa.
John was one of a kind. A soft spoken, true Melanesian Leader who always put other people before himself. He was a true brother, comrade, a defender and a champion.
May you rest in peace JC, our true Melanesian Chief. We salute you!
