After 15 years of continuous work in the most biodiverse place on the planet, the Manu Biosphere Reserve, the Crees Foundation for Manu is proud to be on track to launch Peru's first voluntary biodiversity credit.

We are commemorating this launch through a partnership with Venetia Higgins who has hand craft 123 framed miniature paintings imbued with a Crees Biodiversity Credit.

On May 9th, we joined the global scientific community for Global Big Day 2026. As the most significant date in the international birdwatching calendar, this 24-hour event generates critical open-access data used to monitor avian distribution and shifting biodiversity patterns worldwide.

Our team surveyed key ecological niches across the Manu Learning Centre, including our clay lick (colpa) on the Madre de Dios River, the wetlands, high-elevation viewpoints, and our regenerating forest trails.

The Results:

Total Species: 109

Dominant Families: 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦 (Antbirds), 𝘗𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦 (Parrots), and 𝘛𝘺𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦 (Tyrant Flycatchers).

There many highlights such as spotting a Golden-collared Toucanet with the Masked Tityra (Featured in Slide 3).

By contributing to this global dataset, we strengthen the conservation narrative for the Madre de Dios region. This data provides the evidence needed to protect these vital ecosystems and track the success of our long-term forest restoration efforts.

We are thrilled to have documented Peruvian spider monkeys (𝘈𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘬) within our secondary forest. This species is currently classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List.

They face significant threats from hunting, habitat loss, and the illegal pet trade. The 643 hectares of the Manu Learning Centre provide a vital, safe refuge where this species, along with many others, can persist and thrive. 🐒

This week, we welcomed a new member to our team, Gian Piero! He is a biology student with strong knowledge, especially of insects and birds. During his introduction to our work and the rainforest that surrounds us at the Manu Learning Centre, we went on a tropical ecology walk so he could begin learning from the incredible biodiversity we have here.🌿
