Regalando Sonrisas 2020

My name is Cesar Percy Cruzatte and I am a United States Army veteran with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. I reside in Houston, Texas but I’m originally from Chiclayo, Peru where many of my family members still reside.

For the last eleven years, I have been organizing these Giving Smiles events, providing a traditional Christmas meal and gifts for children in Chiclayo, Peru and the surrounding areas. This year, many of these children and their families are in desperate need of help.

Peru has been hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis, with a mounting number of cases overwhelming the local health care systems and many families unable to afford day to day essentials due to the economic consequences of the outbreak.

Due to the pandemic, people in these regions are struggling to simply survive. In response, this year Giving Smiles will adjust to the situation by providing these families with food to help them through the hard times. In place of the usual Christmas meal and toys, we will provide baskets of food staples including rice, sugar, panettone (a Christmas brioche with candied fruit), oatmeal, salt, vinegar, crackers, evaporated milk, canned tuna, noodles, beans, jello, cooking oil and a bar of chocolate plus essentials such as toilet paper.

Over the last decade, this event has provided gifts and a Christmas meal to thousands of children. In the first year, my family and I hosted a party for 50 children. Every year since the inception, the number of children attending my Giving Smiles event has steadily increased.

In 2018, we managed to serve over 785 hot meals and gave the children 785 brand-new toys for Christmas, as well as arrange two different venues that would accommodate such a large group.

In addition to the meal, each child received a brand-new toy. This toy was likely the only one or perhaps nearly all the children will ever receive. Until six years ago, l bore the entire cost of this annual event myself. Then, at the suggestion of a friend, I arranged to establish a GoFundMe account, to which some very generous friends and co-workers made donations. We promote this annual event by word of mouth and via social media. Since I, a military veteran, host the event, we reach a large number of military personnel, veterans, and government contractors. Our goal is to provide food for 500 families. I want to extend my personal thanks to everyone who has donated in the past, and to those who donate this year. The joy we have brought to these children over the past decade has been priceless, but this year your donations will ensure that they and their families have the basic necessities for survival.
