On 25 September 2025, we proudly welcomed Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Minister for Regional Development, Shane Jones, to officially open Te Waihekeora Reservoir – a major milestone for water infrastructure in the Kaipara region.
With a capacity of 3.3 million cubic metres, the Reservoir stores water harvested during peak flows through a 14km pipe network, making it available for use during dry periods.
The $26 million dollar Reservoir and the $11 million dollar pipe network was built with a $35 million dollar loan from Kānoa, a $1.35 million dollar loan from Northland Regional Council, with the remaining amount coming from investors utilising the water.
The Reservoir will boost water security, unlock high-value horticulture, and create jobs across the Kaipara region. It’s our second major water storage facility in Northland, following Matawii (2023). Otawere, our largest yet, is set to be completed later this year.
