What is more fitting on World Ocean Day than celebrating our future ocean champions? Enter the Annual Poor Knights Competition Trip. This trip rewards students from around Aotearoa that have taken part in our Experiencing Marine Reserves programme with a once in a life time opportunity, exploring one of Aotearoa's most breathtaking marine reserves, Tawhiti Rahi & Aorangi - Poor Knights Islands.

These students didn't just win a lucky dip; they earned their spots through action. Take Nelly from Wellington, who organised a bake sale to raise funds for new snorkel gear, or Stella from Taranaki, who created a powerful diorama contrasting a healthy ocean with the devastating effects of sand mining. In the Gisborne region, students like Harper were out in their local rivers, using clarity tubes and conducting eel surveys to monitor freshwater health.

For many of the participants, hitting the water at Maroro Bay was an emotional revelation. After spending months studying marine protection, seeing it in action is a different story.

The magic of this trip isn't just what happens under the water—it’s what happens on the boat. It’s a "well-being trip" where like-minded young people connect, share stories of their environmental mahi, and realise they aren't alone in their passion for the planet.

Mountains to Sea founder Samara Nicholas celebrated the 25-year legacy of the trip. For her, the true reward is bumping into former students years later who are now marine biologists, conservationists, or simply lifelong advocates for the sea.

As we celebrate 25 years and over 500 students who have shared this experience, the message remains the same: to protect it, you must love it; and to love it, you must see it.
The Poor Knights trip shows our future leaders how our moana should be—full of life, vibrant, and respected. These students are now heading back to their schools and whānau, carrying a piece of the Poor Knights in their hearts and a renewed drive to protect their local blue backyards.

Tawhiti Rahi & Aorangi - The Poor Knights Islands are in the rohe of Ngāti Wai and we appreciate being able to visit the moana around these taonga.

A big ngā mihi to Te Whānau o Rangiwhakahu for the welcome into their rohe moana. As well as Dive! Tutukaka, The Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation, Foundation North, Wettie, Whangarei Coastal Commuters, Schnappa Rock and the Matapouri Holiday Units for continuing to support this life changing trip.

Big thanks also go to our regional provider partners Friends of the Te Whanganui-o-Hei Marine Reserve Trust, Mountains to Sea Wellington, Tasman Bay Guardians, Nga Motu Marine Society, He Awa Ora, He Tai Ora, Healthy Rivers, Living Sea

If you would like to get your school involved in our programme and have a chance of going on this once in a lifetime trip express your interest in a school programme on our website, www.mountainstosea.org.nz. Feel free to get in touch with our awesome coordinators around Aotearoa.

How’s this for the next generation taking action?

We recently ran a combined Experiencing Marine Reserves / Whitebait Connection school programme to 130 tamariki at Waterlea Primary School in Māngere Bridge thanks to funding from Foundation North and Auckland Council. The combined programme included stream investigations, a kayak on the nearby Manukau Harbour, and a snorkel trip to Goat Island Marine Reserve.

While we aim to inspire a sense of kaitiakitanga through these projects, it’s not the only goal. Through these programmes, we want to inspire students to take restorative action - to be agents of change. That's why every student who partakes in these programmes does an action project.

Enter Charlie.

For his action project, he was determined to let the community know about the issues affecting their local freshwater and marine environments.

Firstly, he wrote a letter and printed out HUNDREDS of copies. He also hand-made conservation-themed bookmarks to deliver with the letters, just to help get the message across (see the pictures!).

Then he got on his scooter, and hand-delivered the letters and bookmarks around the neighbourhood.

Locals buzzed about it on the local page…but it didn’t stop there.

Local conservation group Friends of the Farm, who Charlie promoted in his letter, saw what he was doing. Together, they organised ‘Charlie’s Foreshore Cleanup’ along the Māngere Bridge waterfront.

On April 17, around 50 locals showed up and got stuck in…from school children right through to an 87-year-old who wanted to help! Not only did they pick up 15kgs of rubbish, they made enduring connections with their neighbours and their local conservation group.

When we say ‘communities hold the solutions to the conservation issues affecting us’, this is what we mean.

Kia kaha, Charlie, and everyone who attended the cleanup!

BREAKING NEWS: IT'S A FOUR-FISH RACE. Can anyone stop Magnificent Muddy? Comments required! Read more below...

The Northland Mudfish has significantly closed the gap with 2026 competition heavyweights longfin eel | tuna, whale shark, and big belly seahorse | maiana. There's now less than 150 votes between first and fourth place!

In a stunning development, has promised to change their flagship team name from the Northland Taniwha to the Northland Mudfish if the little guy gets across the line. We're confident this off-handed facebook comment has written board approval and will be actioned in the event of a mudfish victory!

With a school of contenders lurking a couple hundred votes back (and conceivably within striking distance), it really is anyone's race!

Other movers include 'Honorary Fish' Jono Ridler, and the sunfish - the world's largest bony fish (none of this cartilage nonsense).

To all our campaigners including Live Ocean , Marine Science Otago, Regional Council, , and you other orsum fish lovers, this is where legends are made! Thanks so much for your hard work promoting our awesome ika!

Who did you vote for, and why? Best comments go in the draw for prizes from our sponsors!
