On Thursday, we attended the opening of the new Kāinga Ora Homes on Kanae Way, Maunu, Whangārei.

A great milestone with 95 new homes delivered for whānau, including accessible housing for Tāngata Whaikaha.

It is great to acknowledge all of the partners who helped bring this important project to life, and the ongoing commitment to ensuring whānau have access to safe, warm, and secure housing.

Congratulations Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities.

The introduction of wahine into the SafeMan SafeFamily Aotearoa-NZ space has helped participants to look at things through a different lens.

In this video we hear from a young mother who shares her story.

In 2024 Phil Paikea from SafeMan SafeFamily Aotearoa-NZ had the idea of inviting women in to the 14-week Redemption Journey program.

The weekly program helps whānau heal from the effects of violence in a safe non-judgemental space.

Led by peers with lived experience and supported by professionals, it teaches tools to manage emotions, resolve conflict, improve communication, and support safer relationships.

Including women and couples has broadened perspectives, encouraged whānau to engage in healthy kōrero and share their healing journeys.

Pink Shirt Day is all about standing up to bullying by celebrating what makes people different and helping make schools, workplaces, and communities places where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and included.

Last night at Kai Toi Cafe in Whangarei friends, whānau and supporters came together to celebrate Papa Tewārihi Hetaraka becoming an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori arts, culture and iwi leadership.

Papa Te Warihi Hetaraka (Ngāti Wai, Ngāpuhi, Tainui) is a master carver and tohunga whose lifelong leadership includes overseeing nationally significant wharenui such as Te Tii Waitangi, advocating for Ngāti Wai through historic Waitangi Tribunal claims, revitalising Māori narratives in Parliament, and serving in senior kaumātua, governance and advisory roles across cultural, educational and government sectors.

Stories, memories and laughter were shared and in typical Papa Te Warihi style he reluctantly accepted with humility and witty humour.

"E te rangatira, tēnā koe i āu mahi nunui mō te iwi."

The arrival of NZ Defence Force personnel and assets has always been a welcome sight to many Northlanders in times of need, and we’re glad to have them back in the region for the Cyclone Vaianu response.

Three heavy vehicles and crews have been deployed to work alongside Northland - Fire and Emergency throughout the region, with the option to relocate these to where they may be needed most. Surf lifesavers from local clubs throughout Northland are also part of the response, bringing additional knowledge and capabilities.

This combination has already been responsible for multiple rescues in recent weather events in Northland, and we’re grateful that they’re ready to do it all again if needed.

(Hint: you could make it easier for them by not trying to drive through floodwaters 🙏).

State of Emergency declared in Northland as precautionary step

A State of Emergency has been declared for Northland as at 5pm Friday 10 April, for an initial period of seven days, as part of the regional response to Cyclone Vaianu.

Regional-wide emergency declarations are relatively rare in Northland and the move has been taken as a precaution given the potentially significant impacts that may be seen across Taitokerau from Cyclone Vaianu.

Declaring an emergency is a step under our legislation which allows the Civil Defence Controller and/or those to whom they delegate authority, access to emergency powers, granting authority to protect life and property in extraordinary emergency events under the Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Act 2002.

The most commonly-used emergency powers include evacuating premises and places, entering premises, closing roads and public places, removing aircraft, vessels, vehicles etc and requisitioning property, equipment, material or supplies. Of these, enabling evacuations is often the key reason for an emergency declaration.

We don’t know yet whether emergency powers will need to be used, but this declaration means we can act quickly if required.
