Welcome to the Whakatane International Community Herb Garden!
This is a place where migrant people can grow the herbs of their country. It is a helpful way for migrants to promote their food culture and make connections with local people.
This garden is for the benefit of everyone – migrants, Tangata Whenua and Pakeha. It aims to encourage inclusive cultural diversity through cooking and food preparation using the herbs of international cuisine.
The garden serves as a space for community engagement. It is a place to bring together many cultures, promote sustainable gardening, encourage people getting together and will help to foster positive intercultural exchanges.
This community project is brought to you by the EBOP Migrant Advice and Support Trust.

What is Bridging Cultures?

Bridging Cultures is Inclusive Aotearoa Collective Tāhono’s (IACT) latest project focused on enabling social cohesion and bridging the gap between Pacific, ethnic and Māori communities. We are partnering with Marae all over Aotearoa to hold day-long sessions that allow for storytelling, connection, and learning between communities.

Taking place at Marae, the day begins with a powhiri and history from the local iwi, before moving on to introductions and connection workshops in small groups (in between kai breaks - of course!). With a focus on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Aotearoa’s multicultural future, the day is a fantastic opportunity to improve community connections and move forward with strengthened local solidarity.

While the main idea is to strengthen community connections, there is also space for strategic development on local issues that affect multiple community groups. The idea is not just to facilitate a one-day meet and greet but lay the groundwork for long-lasting connections.

Why?

The research we conducted in our 2020 - 2022 Belonging and Inclusion conversations highlighted the difficulty in forming connections across different communities, particularly with tangata whenua. Our country is deeply influenced by its colonial history, and there are not enough resources and spaces for tauiwi to connect with tangata whenua and Te Ao Māori culture.

On the Marae?

Bridging Cultures takes place on Marae, and applied Te ao Māori values and principles. This allows for a kaupapa Māori approach where principles of manaaki (hospitality), kaitiaki (guardianship/care) and whanaungatanga (relationships) will guide the pūrākau (narratives) and the mana (integrity/respect) of all participating. The opportunity for communities to build relationships under the intentions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a marae setting will benefit all and allow for local hapu/iwi to connect with communities within the rohe (region).
