One of the most encouraging, yet sobering things we love to do here in the UK, is visit the sites where faithful believers of the past have paid for their faith in Christ with their lives.
This monument, in Bury St Edmunds displays the names of 17 believers, who were burned at the stake for their faith in the 1500's under the reign of Queen Mary. Their crime? Being a faithful believer (guilty anyone?).
What was remarkable about this monument, was the mention of someone called "James Abbes", and reading after his name it simply said "a youth", and then "burned August 2nd, 1555". I wonder how old he was?
It's just staggering to reflect upon. And yet there are times we Christians stay at home from church because it's raining. Lord, please grant us the faith and courage of these faithful believers of the past, and Lord please raise up a generation of "youth" with a resolve like James Abbes.
