A reminder that medically unnecessary procedures to make an infant fit into a box of socially acceptable male or female are harmful and are still happening.

Steph was just days old when a decision was made about her body that she could never consent to.

She was born with an inters*x variation and underwent irreversible surgery to remove her go**ds shortly after birth.

Thirty years later, she is still searching for answers — including whether her fertility could have been preserved.

Steph is incredibly brave to speak publicly about what happened to her. 💛💜

And she is not alone. Across Australia, children born with variations in their s*x characteristics still undergo unnecessary medical procedures before they are old enough to understand what is happening or have a say in decisions about their own bodies.

In February, Victoria passed laws to protect children from these procedures without their consent, following the ACT's lead in 2023.

Now the rest of Australia needs to follow.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up, understand their own body and have a say in decisions that shape their future.

Thank you, Steph, for being brave enough to tell your story. Now our decision-makers need to be brave enough to change the law.

Inters*x Aotearoa have submitted to the Select Committee on the "Definition of Woman & Man Amendment Bill". You can read our submission attached, but in summary;

The Bill claims to reflect “biological reality”, but ignores inters*x people and the reality of human s*x development. Inters*x variations are natural biological outcomes, not exceptions, defects, or legal afterthoughts.

By forcing all people into a strict male/female binary across New Zealand law, the Bill risks creating legal uncertainty, weakening existing protections, and excluding inters*x people from recognition in law, healthcare, and public life.

We are calling on the Committee to recommend that the Bill does not proceed. Any future law must recognise inters*x variations of s*x characteristics as a co-equal part of normal human development.
