LSC is incredibly sad to hear the news and end to our local Summer Shakespeare here in Wellongton.

40 years is an incredible legacy and we have various LSC alumni who have taken part in that time.

Thank you SS for delighting our the summers over the years with all the wonder and spectacle that Shakespeare can offer.

Wellington Summer Shakespeare Trust Announces Closure after 40 Years of Celebrating the Bard

Wellington, 12th of June 2023

After four decades of enchanting audiences with captivating performances of Shakespearean plays, the Wellington Summer Shakespeare Trust has made the difficult decision to close its doors. This closure marks the end of an era for one of New Zealand's most beloved theatrical traditions.

Established in 1983, Wellington Summer Shakespeare captured the essence of early 80s Wellington student culture with its inaugural production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' featuring punk fairies and innovative interpretations. Originally produced by the Victoria University Drama Club, the Summer Shakespeare Trust took over production duties in the mid-2000s and has since continued to entertain and inspire audiences with outstanding performances.

Over the years, Wellington Summer Shakespeare has served as a platform for renowned national and international artists, both on and off the stage. It has nurtured and propelled the careers of up-and-coming creatives, solidifying its reputation as a breeding ground for talent. The trust has pushed the boundaries of performance venues, transforming various outdoor spaces into stages, including the University Quad, the Dell in the Botanic Gardens, the steps of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gladstone Vineyard, and even car parks such as Te Whaea National Dance & Drama Centre in 1999 and Reading Cinema's car park in 2018.

In recent years, the Summer Shakespeare Trust assumed a greater governance role in organising each production following the closure of the Drama Club. The appointment of a permanent administrator aimed to ensure effective and direct continuity between each year's production while fostering ongoing relationships with the numerous organisations that have supported the trust throughout its existence.

Although the Summer Shakespeare has always been primarily driven by students and associated with the university, Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington has taken a more formal role as the principal sponsor in the past few years, solidifying its commitment to the event.

The trust board is very grateful for the university’s invaluable patronage over such a long period of time, and also for the long-term support of the Wellington City Council.

The decision to close the Summer Shakespeare Trust was made after careful consideration of various factors. While the trust acknowledges the immense support it has received from the community, changing circumstances and shifting priorities have made it increasingly challenging to sustain the organisation.

The Wellington Summer Shakespeare Trust expresses its heartfelt gratitude to all the artists, volunteers, sponsors, partners, and audiences who have contributed to its success over the past four decades. Their unwavering support has allowed the trust to create magical theatrical experiences and enrich the cultural fabric of Wellington.

The trust remains immensely proud of its legacy and the significant impact it has had on the performing arts scene in New Zealand. It hopes that the memories and inspiration garnered from the Summer Shakespeare productions will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.

If you would care to share your memories of Summer Shakespeare in the comments, we would love to hear your stories.

Tom Kereama
King John

The man, the myth, and the legend! Here to grace us with another iconic performance, we welcome Tom back for his second LSC show and we cannot imagine it without him. We often see him performing serious roles, but it's been a delight finding moments in this show to have some fun and have a laugh (even though of course he ends up being ever so dramatic anyways). The level of professionalism is off the charts and seeing the love, fun, drive and passion he brings to King John is just so beautiful to watch. Don't miss out, only three days to seethe show!

Margo van de Water
The Bastard

Any skeptics of our gender-blind casting would only have to watch one minute of Margo's performance to have their skepticism silenced, perhaps forever. In her debut LSC show, I couldn't be happier to work with such smart, receptive and bold actor. The Bastard serves as such a special role, guiding the audience through the show, and she eats up every opportunity. I'm so excited to see her character grow throughout the show from an outcast to the main character and give one performance you won't be soon to forget!

Jess Booth
Constance/Hubert

Another familiar face of LSC has returned to the stage! I am so thrilled to have Jess back to take on these incredibly diverse roles. Constance is such a loud and powerful woman in this show, easily some of the best Shakespearean speeches about motherhood, and to watch her agree to the challenge has been incredible. Her presence is unmatched and on the other hand her Hubert is just too adorable for words. I was immediately drawn to Constance when I first read this script and I cannot wait to present her to our Wellington audience with our incredible twist.

Lewis/Henry

Guess who's back in the house!? Of course we were thrilled when our LSC regular agreed to join our show despite already performing in another Fringe season. And boy are we lucky!
Because of her commitments, we gave her two roles that have now completely jumped off the page and into our hearts from what would have otherwise been lost in the background. It's been such a pleasure to have such a powerhouse read straight into the characters and project them larger than life before our eyes. She is an absolute Rockstar and I cannot wait to see her headbang her way across that stage.

Alida Steemson
Queen Elinor/Pembroke

It's an absolute pleasure to welcome back another previous LSC face. We haven't seen Alida since Troilus and Cressida and it's so good to have her back in such a lovely role. She has a unique skill of storytelling right through whatever text she is given, so it's been a delight working in even more layers to her characters and always catching a glance at what she's up to even if she isn't speaking in a scene. She's an absolute pro and sure to deliver a performance to remember.

Kristin Leslie
Austria/Essex/Salisbury

Big welcome to Kit as she takes the stage in her first LSC show! We were thrilled to welcome her to the cast as her knowledge of Shakespeare is unmatched. It is always exciting to hear new voices join our shows and hers is a total stand out as our nobility characters. It's been such a joy watching her characters grow throughout the rehearsal process and it'll be such a moment to see them come to life on the stage, especially as a devil minion. You'll know when you know.
