NZ Fabian Society

NZ Fabian Society INCITING DEBATE WERO I TE AHI Initially, we will focus on the fundamental requirement that New Zealand shapes a sustainable economic future for itself.

The Fabian Society is an independent membership-based policy forum that aims to provide a forum for education and debate on progressive policy priorities by providing quality events, publications and research. ‼️POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER‼️, NEW DATE IS 12TH MAY, 6PM, ST PETERS ON WILLIS ( #211)

We’ve endured more than 40 years of neoliberal economics, of privatization and plunder.

How do we shake off the millstone? And what do we replace it with?

How do we return to a focus on the long-term public good, rather than short-term corporate profit? How can we plan our economy to work for the many, and not just the few?

The Greens want economic transformation, an economy that works for everyone instead of exhausting and exploiting our people and planet. Last year they produced an alternative budget, an alternative fiscal strategy, and an industrial strategy.

Chlöe Swarbrick went to the UK late last year and met many leading left-wing thinkers – including Thomas Piketty, Yanis Varoufakis, Mariana Mazzucato, Daniela Gabor, and Gary Stevenson. (Listen to Chlöe on Gary’s economics here)

Chlöe will speak about how we might break with the current narrow fiscal and economic orthodoxy and build a stronger and more equitable future for Aotearoa New Zealand.

The session will be chaired by Max Rashbrooke.

📣 WELLINGTON! Join us for an open hui on the future of public health! Together for Public Health - Kaitiaki Hauora - supported by NZ Fabian Society.

What Kaitiaki Hauora are fighting for:
✅Fund public health properly – so everyone gets care when they need it
✅Honour te Tiriti- ensuring Māori lead on equity in the health system
✅Keep healthcare public - so care stays for people, not profit

In this pivotal election year, Kaitiaki Hauora provides a clear, unifying voice for publicly funded healthcare, bringing together communities, health workers, iwi Māori Partnership Boards, unions, and advocacy groups to campaign collectively for a strong public system that works for everyone.

Hear from Fleur Fitzsimons, Louisa Wall, Luca Zampese and Dr Malcolm Mulholland.

Over 2026, public healthcare will be under intense scrutiny as decisions are made about funding, delivery, and the growing role of private interests in our health system.

⚡WELLINGTON EVENT⚡ Why are power bills rising in NZ while Australians are about to get three free hours of electricity a day?
Join the NZ Fabian Society for a timely conversation on how our electricity market got here, and how it could change!🤞
Economist Geoff Bertram and energy expert Scott Willis explore how decades of market reforms have reshaped the sector, why prices keep climbing, and what a fairer, more decentralised system powered by wind and solar might look like.
The session will be chaired by journalist and lawyer Ollie Neas.
