EnergyMate coaches visit homes to help whānau use energy more efficiently, and hopefully save some money.

One thing they do is check the household’s electricity plan. They’ll even coach the client through a call to their electricity retailer to check what plans are available and that they’re on the plan that will help them use electricity as efficiently as possible.

Here’s what we found about EnergyMate clients and their plans over the past year:

• 91% of EnergyMate clients are on post-pay plans, with 9% on pre-pay.
• 55% said they’re on a Low Fixed User plan (and are eligible for the low fixed charge power credit support).
• 45% are already on a payment plan, and 20% are billed weekly/fortnightly.
• 89% were already on the best tariff for their household’s needs, and 21% had spoken to their retailer in the past week before the energy coaching visit.

These insights show where targeted support makes the most significant difference, helping create warmer, healthier homes across Aotearoa.

Erganz (the organisation behind EnergyMate) has updated its online resource for consumers who may be finding it difficult to paying for electricity. ‘Having trouble paying your power bill?’ introduces various sources of support and ways consumers can find out more online.

Some of these support options come from the big companies that generate electricity and/or sell it to consumers. The government or community organisations provide others.

You’re welcome to download and share “Having trouble paying your power bill?“ as widely as you like, or you could add it to the resources you share with consumers in hardship.

A warm, dry home makes all the difference – for your health, your whānau, and your power bill.

Insulation is the single most effective way to keep heat in and costs down, and it’s the first thing we recommend checking. Alongside insulation, the Healthy Homes Standards set clear requirements for heating, ventilation, moisture control, drainage and draught-stopping in rental properties, giving tenants confidence that their homes support healthier living.

You can learn more about the Healthy Homes Standards and check whether your home meets them here: https://www.tenancy.govt.nz/healthy-homes/healthy-homes-standards-what-a-tenant-needs-to-know/

Do you know all the components that contribute to your electricity bill?

Just under a third or so is for generation, which means the electricity you use to turn on the lights and run appliances. EnergyMate can help you use energy more efficiently, which may help reduce your energy bill. For many people, this cost increased by 4.6 per cent in the last quarter.

Transmission and distribution (getting the electricity from where it’s generated to your home) make up just over a third of your bill. You pay for this through a daily fixed charge, which stays the same no matter how much electricity you use. These charges increased by an average of 20.1 per cent since April 2025.

The last third is made up of administrative and retail costs (staff, billing, etc) and GST. These are also fixed portions of your bill.

• 43% run their heat pump at higher than 21’c.
• 29% do not turn switches off at the wall.

A visit from an EnergyMate can make an incredible difference for whānau in energy hardship.

As just one example, this year, a 17-year-old solo mother living in a Kainga Ora home with her 7-month-old baby was facing significant financial hardship.

An EnergyMate coach helped work out the reasons behind her large energy bills and discussed strategies like using the timer function on the heat pump and heating only necessary areas.

She was offered a better electricity plan by her retailer after a joint phone call with her EnergyMate coach and her retailer, and connected to a mother and baby support group.

Through regular check-ins and holistic support, yet another EnergyMate client has gained greater confidence in managing energy usage, budgeting, and overall household wellbeing.

Curtains can make a big difference in keeping your home warm and reducing energy use if you use them well.

Open your curtains during the day to let in the sun’s natural warmth, and close them before sunset to keep the heat in. The best curtains for this are double-layered or heavy, and hang close to the window frame to the floor.

Small changes like this can help improve comfort and reduce heating costs.

EnergyMate works with households that are often most affected by rising power costs — and where tailored energy advice can make a real difference.

Here’s a snapshot of the households we supported over the past year:

• 54% of home occupants have children (21% have 3 or more) and 15% have elderly in the home.
• 82% of clients receive benefits or WINZ entitlements.
• 74% of EnergyMate clients live in rental accommodation
(including 12% in social housing and 27% Kāianga Ora), 24% are homeowners.

Energy hardship affects people in many different ways — but with the proper support, families can take steps to better manage their energy use and costs.

We’ll be sharing more insights from our fifth year on the NZ LinkedIn and pages.

Doors and windows!

Seal up any cracks and gaps in your house to keep the hot air inside and the cold air out.

A good place to look is around your doors and windows. You can seal up your windows with some draught tape from a hardware store and use a draught stopper in front of your door. You could even make your draught stopper by rolling up a towel or stuffing an old rugby sock!
