We're sending aroha to all Wellingtonians doing it tough after this rough week.
As we all begin to regroup, recuperate, and assess the damage, our assessor team have some advice:
Storm damage to your home may not be obvious. While it may not be the first thing you think of after a flooding event, wind and rain can cause issues for your ceiling and underfloor too.
When water gets in, your ground vapour barrier can be compromised, with water pooling on top, creating unwanted moisture in your home. If there's space for access, you can use a wet/dry vacuum or sump pump and a dehumidifier to dry it out.
At the same time, roof leaks can soak your ceiling insulation, reducing its effectiveness and increasing the risk of mould, damp smells, and higher energy bills.
With Wellington’s wild weather lately, there’s a chance your insulation may have taken a hit. If it’s safe to do so, it’s worth having a quick check.
Look for dampness, pooling water, or sagging insulation under the house, and any signs of moisture or staining in the ceiling space.
If you find something that doesn't look right, we recommend that your insulation should be removed and replaced and your underfloor or ceiling cleaned and dried. If your ground vapour barrier is damaged or very wet, it may also need drying and replacing.
